lets talk ps3 steering wheels.....

for christmas this year i'm going to build a seat/steering setup for my ps3.....
the only game i really play is F1 2010 and will be picking up the new F1 2011.....
i play the occasional gran turismo 5 to turn laps at the ring and lemans....

so far i'm leaning towards the logitech g27.....

Logitech - G27 Racing Wheel

but.....then i came across this.....actual ferrari style f1 wheel with many many customizable features.....this thing really is the cats meow, you can get the wheel itself to add-on to the t500rs setup.....but this is WAY out of budget for me.....unless i can find my magic hat.....

Thrustmaster - Ferrari F1 Wheel Integral T500 - Includes the Ferrari F1 Racing Wheel and the T500 RS Racing Wheel base & foot pedals

not going to buy a prefabbed seat setup as i want to build my own......

what are you guys using? any other setups out there worth looking into?

My wife bought this

http://www.logitech.com/en-us/gaming/wheels/devices/4172

for me along with GT5 last Christmas, she became a PS3 widow for a few months. I've had no complaints, it doesnt have a clutch pedal, that's really the only thing that I see is missing. You have all the same functionality, just slightly different layout - no paddles, use the buttons on the back instead. I don't know how much more I'd get out of the higher end models, including the Ferrari, although it is friggin cool.

One of the other members here - Equality7251 built one from an old racing seat and a weight bench. I'm still looking for both to build my own.

nice.....i don't really want the clutch pedal, but it isn't an option for the g27....was thinking of turning it into a dead pedal. for the f1 game the ferrari wheel would be perfect, but way to much cash.........i like the paddle shifters.......how does the force feedback feel on yours? i know that your wheel and the g27 have the same drive system for the ff. i need to make my seat setup where it can be stored easily as i have a 1 bd apartment and a wife lol

Just got a G27 this week. I do not have much time with it yet and need to dial in the feel, but so far it rocks. The clutch/shifter is just plain cool when playing GT legends.

anyone else using one of these?
the designer/engineer seems to know what he's doing.

I've only played on a couple other wheels, but I frankly like this one the best - maybe just used to it. The FF is pretty slick, it's good about pretyt good about giving you a simulated sense of where you are with the car like when you hit a turtle, and a good representative feel of how much effort you need to throw a car around or thread it thru a needle. The nice thing about the games is that you can adjust a bunch of the variables to change the feel to extremes, you can feel like your driving on a razors edge, or slop it all over the place depending on your preferance.

nice....i like the fine tuning aspect......

I have a Logitech G25 and it has served me well for the last 2 years. It is definately an advantage having a clutch for standing starts races. here is my setup that I built.

The G27 would be a great wheel. The force feedback is good, the paddles are stout, nice leather on the wheel, and the peddles are good.
You might check out the Fanatec stuff, it's a little more pricey but nice.

I have the G27 and a PlaySeat rig. It's great except the seat does not adjust to fit smaller kids if that is of any concern.

This is the Granstand that I referenced in the above link.
Reasonably priced considering all that it can do.
You can't get more adjustable than this:

i love the slider type rails.......i think i could fab up something similar...thanks for the pic....

porsche4life 11-23-2011 07:35 PM

What did that last rig cost to build?

I need to do something similar to that. I have the leather seats out of my 944 I can use for a seat...

I have the newer version PORSCHE 911 GT3 RS wheel from the german company Fanatec and love it. Trust me - you won't believe how superb virtual racing gets when you step up in wheels. You can use the stock paddle shifters or add the manual gate. I plugged in the Logitech G25 triple pedals and they work perfect. The company sells an adapter... how great is that?! The Fanatec pedals are amazing but more than I wanted to spend.

Licensed by Porsche. Excellent variables and control set-up. Alcantara suede and the larger diameter feels right. Big feedback motors seem rugged enough to take the beating if you want to maximize the real feel.

Most pleased and is also compatible for the PC. Shop smartly online and the same package can be had for around $200. I like it so much, I'm shopping for another just for guest use.

For seating, most sim units look ergo wrong and feel wrong. You need to sit low, pedals higher up, monitor correctly skewed. Build your own is the way to go. For portable sake and league meets, I picked up a slightly used AB roller exercise seat and modified it. The whole thing folds up but is far sturdier than many newer off the shelf seat systems. The pedals are adjustable and you can get them up high enough. Another seat I have was a fluke on buying. Its a kicker game seat with a built-in subwoofer that provides vibration sync to game feel. Surprisingly better quality material and controls. A close-out Target special in the box $265.00 marked down to $75.00. Kind of neat but prefer the AB roller modded seat.

the fanatec stuff loks nice, i really like the porsche wheels.....seeing they are really meant for the xbox do they adapt fine for the ps3? more concerened about programming buttons for F1 as the 2011 game has drs and kers etc.....

bell 11-24-2011 07:07 AM

ok just looked at the specs for the Porsche 911 GT3 RS V2 CSR Edition.....nice.....
gonna take a long hard look at it......

my thoughs on the mount is to use one for those game type seats like the kicker....found a decent one at target for about $20.....pretty comfortable, can lay back for f1..

bell 11-24-2011 07:15 AM

i think this is the setup........
