i put some bruises on my wife..not what you think..i hope.

my wife had to take some evasive/defense classes..she is a nursing student, and for the next 5 weeks, she is in some psychiatric hospital. she got all these horror stories that run the spectrum of insanity. one lady got trapped in the bathroom for hours ----> another lady got stalked and hurt at home..

crazy stuff. she came home to show me what she learned. it was amazing..she showed me how the instructor taught them some "yanking" method of getting out of a wrist hold..WTF? so i grabbed her and let her show me the yank..it threw her so off balance. i showed her a better move where you twist your hand, break free.. and run (i guess she cant hit them)..

choke hold..cant remember..foot stomp? elbow to the rib cage?

i told her to forget that "cant hit them" detail and showed her the rear head butt if someone wrapped her up from behind.

i bruised her up pretty good around the wrist..sorry honey.

kinda worried..my wife cannot block or dodge a punch to the face..at all. this i going to be a long 5-weeks for me. (and her, i'm assuming)

Vash,

My wife is a Psych RN (retired) so I can understand how you feel. Good for you for teaching her some self defense!

I teach my woman folk to stomp the foot arch or aim for the crotch (and other un-friendy maneuvers).
I'm not sure I agree with the not hit back policy, any one of those patients could be a dangerous person (psych or not).

You're putting me on the spot here, Cliff. Some are, some aren't, some are embellished, and some get embellished over time. You would also have to consider the frequency (or infrequency) of occurrences. Most likely nothing will happen during the five weeks that your wife is there.

Sister in law retired from psychiatric nursing after a scuffle with a patient forced her to need back surgery.

I worked with psych patients in an outpatient setting and felt uncomfortable on occasion. Most weren't violent, just not able to follow "normal" social interaction rules. Touch too much, stand too close, kinda like PARF.

You are going about it wrong.
If she beat the crap out of a patient, doesn't matter if it's self defence, it will be a career ender.

The knowledge she needs is how to avoid the situation to begin with, tell her to latch onto the experienced staff and forget about the younger hip crowd because they don't know poop.

Not putting miles on your car is like not having sex with your girlfriend, so she'll be more desirable to her next boyfriend.

true.

but my wife is not gonna beat any one up. not so sure she can..she is pretty small. not so strong.

she needs just enough to get away. we discussed knowing surroundings, knowing where the doors are, etc.

i cant believe they send them in solo like that..i would team the students up.

but, if she was caught in a choke hold..career decisions should go out the window..if it were me.

i cant wait for tonight's dinner conversation!! i am serving stew, and crazy rice!

Strike zones: Eyes, nose, wind pipe, or groin.
Which ever gets the job done in short order.

This probably sounds like a ridiculous idea (and maybe it is...) but would dodgeball help? Seriously, learning to move your body out of the way of the ball, followed by learning to get your FACE out of the way, then throws from the sides, etc. Minimal chance of hurting her but teaching her to get the hell out of the way.

I always wonder what they mean by RUN. Obviously, it means RUN, but run how? Straight line? Over furniture? Tip the furniture as you go? How to handle the doors? Obviously SHE goes through and tries to keep THEM on the otherside, but what to do - lock the door? black it with her foot (probably a bad idea if she's small), jam a chair under it if it won't lock? Or just slam the door repeatedly on any part of their body that tries to get through?

I"m really not trying to be a wise aleck, just trying to figure out what they are teaching her to send her alone into a room with those who might do her harm.
