New and first hand spoon, recommended ammo?

I will be picking up my first hand spoon today, an H&K P7, which came with the original box, tools and manual but lacks a second magazine. The price was competitive as compared to gunbroker.com.

What rounds have people had success in running through the P7? I would like to shoot a good 100 rounds through it this weekend.

I have no experience with that gun, but when you buy another magazine, buy a factory one. You won't regret it.

I suspect that a box of Winchester White Box FMJ ammo from Walmart would run through it just fine.

Yep, Winchester white box or Remington bulk-pack ammo. Put at least 250-500 rounds through it to really break it in. Stick to factory mags, save your brass (to reload) and post results here. Be safe and have fun!

P7

Go to Park Cities Tactical, click Cult of P7, all will be answered. Also HKPro.com, Enjoy - just don't run too hot a load. Sniper?

Did you get a PSP or an M8? The PSP will burn your hand after a few mags full. That gun will eat anything you feed it and will be very accurate. I've had a few of them and loved them. But I'm not much of a 9mm guy.

I picked up a 100 round box of Winchester targets from Farm and Fleet for ~ $22.
I saw Walmart had the same box for ~ $20 but there was nobody manning the counter.
The same box was $33 at Gander Mountain.

Walmart is the place to go for cheap practice ammo, if you can find a helpful associate.

Yep, Gander Mtn is not cheap, but sometimes it's the only place in my area with ammo in stock. Since I've been reloading, I hardly ever buy ammo any more (except personal defense stuff), so I' haven't kept up on availability and prices...

I just go find someone in walmart and tell them I need some ammo. They will find someone for you....

I usually buy the WWB or the Federal at Walmart. W/e they happen to have in stock and is cheap. My XD burns them both the same.

9mm isn't worth reloading, it's too cheap to buy new.

If anyone else had a different opinion, I have 1500-2000 rounds of shot once 9mm FMJ brass I'll sell you for cheap.

Winchester white box FTW.

And I'd be happy to get you started on reloading.

I reload 9mm with 4.3 grains of Red Dot for 115 grain bullets. It's a very light load and won't cycle some of my friend's spoons. I shoot 147 grain loads for my company's pistol league that I use Accurate #7 for (forget how much, I have it written down and do all 300 rounds for a season in one weekend). I bought a crapload of the white box stuff when it was still $15 a box, and shot my reloads when it was $27 a box. Now that the price is about as low as it will go, I may have to pick up some more.

I've shot a little of everything in my G17. I really enjoyed the 124 grain Winchester military surplus loads.

I've carried a P7 for many years. The only mags I use are the HK ones. You can find them on eBay or gunbroker pretty easily, but they are a little pricy. Check out parkcitiestactial for P7 forums and classifieds.

It has eaten any 9mm I've used and been dead reliable. IMHO, it is the perfect carry gun if you can get a good holster. Very accurate, very safe, very reliable, and very concealable. I use a Milt Sparks VMII IWB holster for carry.

P7 holster.......

Contact Ed Buffaloe at "theunblinkingeye.com" for a custom made, lined holster. He does excellent work at close to the same price as bulk made holsters. His come lined with pigskin which is much easier on the gun's finish. He makes IWB and belt holsters. He works quickly and ships for a low price.

For carry ammo, you might want to check out the Hornady line of personal defense ammo or good ole Winchester Silver Tip. Both should work perfectly in your spoon.

awesome choice

magazines are somewhat rarer to find. search on gunbroker. they're $60-70 a piece

make sure u know which model P7 you have. whether it's original P7 (aka PSP)or the P7M8 cause they take different magazines

Make sure if you plan to use it for defense that it's loaded with an ammo you've proven. It can be expensive to burn $1 hollow points at the range but you don't want to trust your life on something that hasn't been tested and proven reliable.

The web is a notoriously bad place to get information especially if you have no litmus test for the information.

There are several sites though that are populated by "real" authorities on certain topics. Pelican is a great place to go for Porsche-related information but notoriously bad when it comes to firearms and ammunition. On PP, there are certain folks that know what they are talking about but the self-defense ammo question, maybe not. I am not claiming to be an authority but a great researcher and student of the topic.

Below is a a cut and pasted piece about 9mm self defense ammo. It references the authoritative documents that are used to base the reply. Lightfighter is full of a-holes but they know about fighting with guns because that's what they do. Take a look at the recommendations and the supporting documents and make a decision based on it and what you can get your hands on.

"You dont need to live in an "industrial area" to have to have the need for a round that is barrier blind. Hydra Shok is known as an abysmal perfromer. Critical Defense, by Hornady's own admission, is unsuitable for defeating common barriers.

Look, we dont get to script our gunfights. Badguys are unpredictable. Just because they grab what they think might be cover doesnt mean the gunfight is over. Its smart to have a round that can deal with common intermediate barriers, all while still penetrating deeply and reliably expanding. Neither of the 2 loads you mention does this.

Wanna know what does? Here you go:

Barnes XPB 115gr HP (35515) loaded by Cor-Bon (DPX09115)

Winchester Partition Gold 124gr JHP (RA91P)

Winchester Ranger-T 124 gr +P JHP (RA9124TP)

Winchester Ranger-T 127gr JHP +P+ (RA9TA)

Winchester Ranger-T 147gr JHP (RA9T)

Winchester Bonded 147gr JHP (RA9B/Q4364)

Speer Gold Dot 124gr JHP +P (53617)

Speer Gold Dot 147gr JHP (53619)

Remington Golden Saber 147gr JHP (GS9MMC)

Federal Tactical 124gr JHP (LE9T1)

Federal Tactical 135gr JHP +P (LE9T5)

Federal HST 147gr JHP (P9HST2)

These loads all meet FBI/IWBA criteria for penetration and expansion through properly calibrated gel, as well said gel with the previously mentioned intermediate barriers.

115gr only for the P7. Supposedly, the heavier bullets beat on the frame too much. For what it's worth.

IMHO, the P7M8 and P7M13, and the P10 are the best ergonomically designed pistols. Congrats!

I checked out the unblinkingeye.com website and there was a nice tutorial on how to make your own form fitted leather holsters. My later father-in-law use to make all kinds of thick leather holsters for large knifes and throwing tomahawks. I never knew how he did it and never asked. I know all his old materials are still in the basement. I may give it a shot making my own.

The P7 is a PSP and not the M8. I have not fired it yet but will this weekend.

Chris,

Next time I am down in your area we should hit the range.
