New espresso machine.

Rancilio Silvia Already hacked it with Auber PID temperature control unit Keeps boiler temperature within 1 degree of your setting Lets you program in shot length and set a 'precharge' of water to soak the expresso for extracting It prevents water from jetting through the espresso I'm sorry I would put in punctuation but I've had like 15 shots of espresso today and punctuation would hold me back Did you know that chaffer dishes the kind you use at catering events actually share a name with chauffer like the guys that drive you around You see the French root of the word is.........

You hacked your espresso machine? I love this place.

porsche4life 11-30-2011 08:19 PM

If it doesn't come with a cute barista to operate it, I'm not interested....

Gogar 11-30-2011 08:31 PM

Congrats! That looks pretty awesome.

208 is a little bit hot, though. ( I had to say something condescending, this is Pelican.)

Well done. :D

A buddy is a big fan of these. He also understands every function of the components and has maintenance kits, and like you does tweeks.

Me? I haven't got a clue what my VBM does, other than makes good coffee.

Well done. Enjoy :)

Fantastic...and the performance upgrade!

Better machine than may coffee shops...

The lack of punctuation after 15 shots of espresso cracks me up!!!

Any bets on how clean his car is now?

motion 12-01-2011 04:55 AM

Cool.... I always wanted one of those big brass or copper ones with the eagle on top. Nice hack, but can you control it with Siri?

I love it!

"Siri, make me a cappuccino please"
"Would you like one or two shots?"
"Two please"
"Haven't you had enough already today? Your voice sounds a little shaky."

Too funny...

and Tabs will chime in on the Mustang posts...

Far cry from your feud ten years ago... IIRC..:)

Freybird 12-01-2011 07:36 AM

Nice! I love mine so much that I put it in my signature.

What grinder do you use?

kaisen 12-01-2011 08:11 AM

I figured Gogar would comment. I was right. Carry on....

tabs 12-01-2011 10:49 AM

Only one to have is the MINI MAZZER....

futuresoptions 12-01-2011 11:00 AM

What is this espresso you talk of?

gtc 12-01-2011 11:55 AM

Mazzers are nice, but there are many other good grinders out there now. You can often find good used small commercial machines for under $300. The Rancilio grinder is ok, but for a little more you can get a much sturdier machine.

I picked up a free Faema MPN grinder last week. It has fresh burrs that I guess weren't adjusted right, and it was painted yellow by some hippy, but it works perfectly.

gtc 12-01-2011 11:59 AM

BTW, Visions Espresso on 1st Avenue in SODO is a great source for parts and service for your Silvia.
They've been a lot of help to me over the years.

Waiting to hear from a friend of mine. He might have a commercial La Marzocco in the pipe for me.

thencamebronson 12-01-2011 03:23 PM

I'm looking to upgrade and the Silvia is at the top of the list, but now I have to look at the Salvatore mentioned earlier.

There's no Liberals Arts college near you? Swing by campus and take your pick! She'll need time off to occupy Wall Street...

porsche4life 12-01-2011 05:07 PM

Dude, I'm at college, I just go in the little coffee shop on campus, staffed with college girls....

Freybird 12-06-2011 05:29 PM

Good luck on the La Marzocco, if it comes through, please post pics! I have a kitchen aid grinder that is way too mickey mouse for Ms. Silvia... I see the Baratza grinders heav good reviews, and then there's the Mazzer, great reviews but $$$$ ouch!

djmcmath 12-06-2011 06:21 PM

Yeah, your next machine will be one of these:

Chris Coffee Service - NEW Alex Duetto II by Izzo

Or it's descendant.

I had some cute little espresso machines like yours once. They're fun, until you grow up. ;)

My Alex is all of that AND a bag of chips. Dual boiler, both PID controlled, with the E61 grouphead.... the coffee is perfect EVERY time. Yup.

But, yeah, cool story bro. ;)

Dan

I lived in a house with a commercial La Marzocco for years.

At my house a Columbian man rides out of the mist on a donkey every morning and hands me a burlap pouch of fresh green coffee beans. I immediately remove them from the pouch and hand-roast the beans over an outdoor fire pit freshly stocked with Austrailian Cypress. Right at second-crack, a sextet of Hawaiian women first cools the roasted beans by fanning them with banana leaves, and just when the beans are perfectly rested, the women strap Samurai swords to their feet perform a ceremonial Samoan war dance on top of the roasted beans, which have in the meantime been rested on a slab of antique Italian marble. The women dance and jump with such a feverish pitch, it works the beans into oh the finest of fine espresso grinds. Upon completion of the ritual Samurai sword foot-grind, the women (who have since become topless due to the athletic tempo of their war dance,) pull Hommage straight razors from their bikinis and carefully collect the ground beans from the marble slab and deposit them into a solid gold espresso group said to have been designed by Leonardo da Vinci. After tamping the grounds carefully and precisely with a roll of gold coins collected from a the Atocha Shipwreck, boiling Perrier is pressure fed through the solid gold espresso group through a hydraulic hose collected from the completed NASA mission STS-135. The resulting espresso, rich with a golden-brown, almost auburn crema, goes in my mouth.
