Wish me luck, I'm going in!

Strategic offensive on the war on hoarding. She is down with the stomach flue, and cannot stop me. I am stuck at home watching the kid with nothing else to do.
We ( she) has one bedroom, that we pretend that does not exist. If I even open the door, she gets pissed, big brawl will ensue. I don't give a rats ass anymore. I blew down another room and large closet this fall, and we had words , but in the end, she thanked me. This room is her last stand, but she is loosing it today .
This may not go so well for me. I may be sleeping up at the shop tonight.

Try to be kind...there is a bit of hoarder in all of us. But we call it "collecting".

A minor example is the row of T shirts in my closet...from long ago car events.

Enemy sighted, shots fired, I think I am hit. Propane tanks are full, and wood pile is large . I think I have some soft car covers up there, that should make good blankets.

just use a fire hose on the last remaining bedroom - it can blow stuff right out the window w/o you having to touch it

Some of life's most important truths are counter-intuitive. We imagine that the more stuff we have the happier we will be. I can report unequivocally that the opposite is true. The LESS stuff we have the happier we are. I have gotten rid of about a semi-full of crap over these past several years, and the experience is truly liberating.

I think I was never happier than when all my stuff fit on my motorcycle.

friend had a crazy aunt. house full of crap. they couldn't convince her to throw any of it away. but they could convince her to let them move it all into a storage locker.

then they simply "forgot" to pay the rent on it. she never even knew it was gone. problem solved.

Byron, we are not talking about of a haul of Porsche parts ( I could live in your place), this is all girl stuff, clothes, books, knick knacks, shoes, .. Plus it has been piled upon itself so long, most of it is ruined, clothes are moldy , most books are wrikled/ torn, chewed by mice. I just always look her in the eye and say " tell me this is important to you, look me in the eye and tell me how you and when you are going to use it". This usually works.
I just found a dead half decayed mouse in a box of books.

If you're finding half dead mice, it's a health hazard as well as being an annoyance. I watch the Hoarders show sometimes and it just amazes me how far people go. My impression on the show is that they don't have family willing to tell them no, a little tough love goes a long way.

The philosophy at my house - if you haven't used it in six months, you don't need it. Fortunately both my wife and I are pretty tidy people, so it works well.

"I think I was never happier than when all my stuff fit on my motorcycle."

I often think that. I spent weeks several times going cross country on the bike and camping over night. Everything I needed for a week or 2 months fit on that bike.

Now, married, with 2 kids, it's the opposite!

Too much stuff!

I "purge" a little every day the trash man comes.

I'll get there. I'll get back there.

Good for you! That's a toughie.

Please make sure you address the behavior with a pro, if you haven't already.

If you don't fix the roots of the problem you'll just get a 'fresh' pile of junk in your house.
