Thread For Little Scores (Garage Sales, Etc)

Thread for mentioning the interesting stuff and perhaps the good deals you stumble across at garage sales, flea markets, junk stores, Craigslist, eBay, and other "one man's junk is another man's treasure" sources.

I like this sort of thing as it provides a window into each of our interests and hobbies. And potentially, one of us might run across something that, thanks to these stories, he'd know another Pelican would be interested in, and a timely PM might lead to a score . . .

Doesn't have to be big items. Small and humble is fine.

I'll start us off. Vintage Seiko auto chronograph, 6139-6XXX type, decent user condition, working, $20 at an "antique mall" aka collection of indoor flea market booths. It'll get a simple NATO band and become a beater watch.

I picked up an early 6v gas VW bus heater for $50

I got one of those craftsman ATV jacks for $10 from a yard sale around the corner a couple years ago. Used it to drop the engine in my 911 and for completely rebuilding my R65.

I scored a 30mm; 21 and 24mm box wrench for $3 a couple weeks ago.

By the way, I have an ATV jack, missing the handle that turns the square thingy to raise/lower the jack (very technical), that a local (PDX) Pelican can have for free. In case anyone's planning an engine drop or motorcycle rebuild soon . . .

JYL - I'm interested (am currently rebuilding mine) and will pass this along to the next Pelican who needs it when I'm done. I'll PM you.

Snap-on 1/2" drive ratchet $8 at garage sale 8 houses away. ( I don't do garage sales )

My Vespa Rally . Found leaning against a fence and the guy was going to a Nascar race and wanted extra beer money. His price was $20 , I felt bad and flipped him $30.

He was pretty happy.

Almost as happy as me :)

mossguy - yes, very similar. 6139-6022. Black face and bezel. I haven't looked at it too closely yet. Seems to work, except maybe the 1/100s hand which might be an easy fix and I don't care anyway.

A Morgan silver dollar mounted in a necklace for $1 at a garage sale.

A930Rocket 12-11-2011 08:06 PM

I have that same watch, but with a blue face. Got it new when I was 15 back in 1974. Gave it to my son when he turned 15.

The small dial, is the needle supposed to move when the second hand is sweeping? Mine doesn't move, at least not on a cursory button pressing. The flyback works fine.

mossguy 12-11-2011 09:29 PM

It's been a long time since mine ran, so I'm not sure, but I think it moves when something is being timed.

Neibour had a yard sale this summer. $20 for the table. It needs refinishing. Now I need some chairs. :)

The long arm keeps track of each minute while the short arm tracks up to 30 minutes IIRC.

jyl 12-12-2011 05:28 AM

Duh. Thank you.

A pair of 14" Fuchs with absolutely ancient michelin tires on them for $30 total. Wheels are straight with original finish. Craigslist.
