You need to re-think this idea. Dog goes outside, is wet/muddy, etc, and lets itself in. What could go wrong?

I would love a cat door, but I expect several of the neighborhood cats would move inside.

The first time she walks in on a racoon chowing down on the catfood, your marching orders will definitely be to replace the door.. exact same thing happened to a good friend.

Tape the door with masking tape where you'll be cutting. Drill a hole use a fine tooth saw. If you're really anal have a spray bottle with water and keep the area misted to control dust. The end.

If you were closer I have a standard size exterior door I'd give you in trade for one with no dog door cut in it.

Get a second door and install the doggie door in that one and store your original door to reinstall when the wife changes her mind.

A SawsAll should make whatever kind of hole you need in that door. You may need to reinforce it around the perimeter of the hole.

haha... I put in a dog door for my <10lb Havanese cross. Very small door installed on a steel/aluminum screen door.

Middle of summer I let him out and went back to sleep. He came back inside and went to sleep. Hour or so later I hear a noise, but think nothing of it. Dog suddenly starts howling, and I hear the clicking sound of a dog walking across the floor. One of the neighbours pitbulls has jumped the six foot fence, and squeezed himself through the small opening. Luckily he was friendly.

Buy one from the recycle place, a little paint, and use a cut-off wheel. They make one-way dog doors with chimes/alarms also. (They don't make wet 'n muddy dog sensors though.)

Our long haired dog is an outside dog.... The house would be full of hair, cat shiit, mud and stank if we allowed him inside. That said, I do let him sleep in the garage in the winter and I briefly considered installing a door for him to enter the garage.... Then one night he got sprayed by a skunk and I realized there is no way I want either a skunk or my dog after being sprayed by a skunk to enter at will into our semi finished garage.

If there is space and a spigot near a door, you can make a dedicated wash-->drain pit area.

Good for boots and tools also.

A couple of battery operated remote controlled tabs on the inside part of the door and you can push a button and control what comes in when you want.

Or if you are not that lazy, just a manual slide. Dog can go out, but nothing can come back in till you release.
