Anyone else have elevator nightmares?
Vitals - Freak accident confirms elevator-phobics' fear
I suffer from recurring elevator nightmares. I probably have one every few months or so and they scare the living crap out of me. Totally not afraid to get in an elevator when I'm awake, so it seems bizarre, but wow, do those things freak me out when I'm sleeping.

Have you ever forced the doors open when an elevator is moving? They stop, my wife will kill me if I do it again.

The Red Rocker is subconsciously afeared of elevators?
I hate the elevator in my building, tiny and slow, fortunately only a two story.

I worked in a building in downtown Houston that was 34 floors. 1-9 was parking. One bank of elevators services floors 10-21, and there was another bank that serviced 22-34. I worked on the 10th floor. While I was working in the building, the bank that I didn't use had IIRC 3 accidents in less than 6 months. The one that I remember the most detail about was that 2 or 3 folks got in on the 27th floor, pushed the button to go down and the elevator went into a free fall. When it got to the 23rd floor, the brakes kicked in and stopped it... immediately. At least one woman that had been standing had the same experience as jumping off of a 4 story building and landing on their feet. She ended up with at least 1 leg with a compound fracture.
article -> http://www.chron.com/neighborhood/heights-news/article/Elevator-falls-have-workers-in-Houston-tower-1744951.php Yeah, I think we had a bunch of folks walking a lot of stairs for a while. I didn't work there, but another story from Houston. Some guy got his head stuck between the doors and managed to get decapitated. The worst part is that there were people that got stuck in the elevator with part of him (I think it was the big part). Snopes confirms it if you don't believe me. http://www.snopes.com/horrors/freakish/elevator.asp One last story. We had some major flooding in downtown houston at some point in the last 10 years or so. Some woman got in the elevator to go to her car in the basement... that was flooded. Yeah, the idea of this one creeps me out a bit. You guess it, she ended up in the elevator submerged in the flooded parking garage and drowned. http://www.chron.com/CDA/archives/archive.mpl/2001_3326466/lawsuit-filed-in-flood-drowning-woman-s-death-insi.html

I have a terrible fear of elevators. I remember going up to the observation deck of the WTC a few times and the elevator moved so fast it was almost hard to tell if you were falling or climbing. I remember an old episode of LA Law where a woman was talking to someone while waiting for an elevator with her back to the elevator. The bell rang, the door opened and she walked backwards into the shaft and fell - no elevator there. The two times I ALWAYS look very closely before stepping are onto an elevator and from the skyway into an airplane. I don't let myself spend more than a millisecond over either threshold.

Imagine being on an elevator with a clown. Just you and the clown. Alone. The clown stands there, staring at the door, not saying a word. Evil permeates the tight confines of the elevator box like the stench of death.
Yeah, elevators give me the creeps.

I was bouncing one once right after we got in and it started to move. Another guy started bouncing an the thing stopped. Then the door opened and the elevator was about a foot out of alignment with the floor. We all got out and took a different elevator down.

Freudian analyses suggests that a fear of elevators (and getting stuck in elevator shafts) is really a deep rooted fear of vaginas. The symbolism is rather obvious.
Vagina-related fears in men are common. One of the most common is "vagina dentata". (Literally that the "vagina has teeth".) Equally common are performance-related fears. Because it is deeply un-masculine to admit to such fear, the unconscious transfers that fear to vagina symbols such as elevators and tunnels. A bit of therapy may be in order for you boys.

Well, I've learned to fear vaginas (and the complications ensuing therefrom) but I don't have a problem with elevators. What does Freud say about that?

I think fear of vaginas is ingrained, sort of like a spider knowing how to build a web, or a bird its nest.
Any animal that bleeds a week out of every month, and does not die, should be feared and respected.

I was in VA/DC this week and stayed at my normal spot - Hilton Alexandria. After I checked in I got dinner and upon return noted the staff was checking out the elevators. I rode up with a maintenance guy and the elevator insisted on stopping every 3rd floor. I was on 28... The next morning I waited 10 minutes for the elevator then rode down...3 floors at a time, until I got to floor 17. The elevator sorta "dropped" a half floor and the alarm went off. Then...a F5 warning appeared on the control board and the elevator went all the way down to LL. Doors did not open and the alarm was going. I started to get freaked out. I waited 1 minute and pushed the L button...the alarm stopped and I was deposited a the L level. I was happy to get out. I then noticed that the lobby had big signs saying DO NOT RIDE ELEVATOR...haha no such sign on the 28th floor.
Guess I am lucky. |
