I Blame My Mother

I have unfortunately been traveling a lot on business lately. I noticed an odd habit: I tidy up the hotel room every morning, even if I am checking out in a few minutes.

I make the bed, pile the towels, wipe down the sink, make sure the trash is picked up, etc.

I think it stems from my Mom, who used to tell us, "pick up your room, the cleaning lady is coming today".

Either that or I don't want to disappoint the maid just in case, you know, she's hot

Life's little mysteries.

Carry on.

IROC 12-20-2011 04:45 AM

I do the same thing!! My wife thinks I'm crazy. To me it is rude to leave a mess for the housekeepers. I also straighten up the plates and napkins before we leave a restaurant. With two young kids, things can get pretty messy and I think it is simply "the right thing to do" to clean up somewhat.

Rot 911 12-20-2011 04:48 AM

I do the same thing. The housekeepers have a hard enough job as it is. Doesn't take but a few minutes to make their lives easier.

GH85Carrera 12-20-2011 04:52 AM

Hot chicks don't work as hotel maids. At least not in any hotel I have ever stayed at.

I don't leave a big mess but I am never going to make the bed at a hotel. Heck that is just more work for the maid, she has to strip it to change the sheets anyway.

masraum 12-20-2011 05:16 AM

I don't straighten up, but I don't leave much mess either. No point in straightening the bed since they should be stripping it anyway.

When I saw the subject I expected this thread to be posted by Tabs. I guess if he had posted it would have just said "I blame mother."

porsche4life 12-20-2011 05:16 AM

How many check under beds, and every possible place to put things, on their way out the door?

MotoSook 12-20-2011 05:19 AM

My father, an educated man and a respected educator in the old country, came to America and the first job he could get in America was as a janitor. Unable to speak the language and with 7 kids to feed, he did the best he could. He worked for 27 years picking up after other people and cleaning toilets. Not a day goes by I don't think about people like him who have to clean up after other people in a thankless job. When I was a kid he use to pick me up from school some days and take me to work with him. I am not sure it was for lack of after school care (as I have older siblings who could watch after me) or if he wanted me to learn hard work and appreciate the things I had growing up, as poor as we were. I use to help him push a broom, mop floors and push his cart around for him. The experience did a lot for me.

I never leave a mess anywhere I go, and when I stay at a hotel I put up the "Do Not Disturb" sign when I am staying more than a day. I don't need the maid to come in and clean up after me every morning. I don't need it at home, why do I need it at a hotel. When I travel for work, 99% of the time I am only at the hotel to sleep anyhow and keep the place tidy to satisfy my own anal retentive ways.

people like you make it harder for people like your father to find work! :D

widgeon13 12-20-2011 05:39 AM

I traveled a lot being in sales and most of the time left the room in good shape but I did not make the bed, figured the maid would take the linen off anyway.

I was traveling years ago and checked in to a room in Chicago Hyatt O'Hare. Found a lady's dress and some cosmetics in the bathroom but the room had been cleaned. Called the desk and advised such. Didn't think too much about it. Come 5:30 PM the alarm goes off. Mystery solved, the woman must have overslept because she set the alarm incorrectly, rushed around trying to make her flight or something and left some stuff.

I checked, the dress didn't fit!:D

crustychief 12-20-2011 06:35 AM

I was in a toy store in the Mall yesterday, looking at plastic models with my 16 year old son and my two year old daughter. The display was a wreck and the store was a little crowded. The lady told us to dig around to find what we wanted, she would straighten it up later. My son and daughter ( she loves to stack stuff ) started to arrange the models according to subject and size. I guess they will clean their hotel rooms later in life because of my wife and I. I was very proud of them both.

wdfifteen 12-20-2011 06:43 AM

It's nice of you to think of the other person. I am neatness challenged, so I only have to walk into a room and it looks like a homeless shelter. I do make sure my trash is picked up and the wet towels are piled on the sink. I don't do the bed. I use only one of the trash cans when I'm in a hotel.
If I use room service I like to put my dishes outside some random door down the hall.:D

A930Rocket 12-20-2011 06:44 AM

I always clean up as we go and before checkout, as well as using a do not disturb sign. The bed is made every day, but the last day.

Joe Bob 12-20-2011 06:49 AM

I always check the alarm clocks....there usually a prvious chucklehead that sets it for 3am.....

recycled sixtie 12-20-2011 06:51 AM

Anybody that cleans up a hotel room has got to be a good spouse/parent. I sometimes leave a tip on the room desk if my stay has been several days but I try to make it easy on the cleanup crew telling them same sheets, same towels etc but more tea and coffee:)No I dont leave it in the same condition as when I arrived but I admire and understand people that doSmileWavy

scottmandue 12-20-2011 06:55 AM

I never leave a mess but don't tidy up either...

However when I was on a week long business trip I bumped into the maid as I left the room one morning and she said "oh, so you are the neat guy".

When we go out to eat my wife buses the table (stacks the plates and silverware, wipes off the table)... she worked as a waitress in college.

Never stayed in a place that had alarm clocks that I can remember. But I do hate that phone ring at 5 am.

Naw, I don't clean up like you guys. I don't leave wet towels on the spread or chairs, I'm not a complete slob.

I have the same problem, my OCD is hard to contain. Still waiting on that hot maid.....

TechnoViking 12-20-2011 07:24 AM

I put the used condoms in the trash so she does not have to deal with them. I figure it's the least I can do.

flatbutt 12-20-2011 07:37 AM

Sorry, but I'm paying for someone else to manage the room. I don't trash my rooms, never have and I don't pee on the floor either. But for $200/night?

vash 12-20-2011 07:39 AM

i am a slob in a hotel room.

No judgment implied at all. I just found it odd I was cleaning up.

vash 12-20-2011 08:07 AM

do you tip?

i leave some $$ on the pillow case, which is surrounded by my filth.

tabs 12-20-2011 09:30 AM

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.. Now that is fked up...and WHO in the title of this Thread is being BLAMED?

MOther always told me she would "smack my little azz" if I didn't keep MY ROOM clean...it got to the point that I started to mess up the room on purpose as I got to enjoy those little azz smacking sessions...especially since Mother always put on her leathers...

That has happened to me on more than one occasion. Like traveling for work isn't bad enough...

And it is CDO - the letters should be in alphabetical order.

If I stay more than two nights.

onewhippedpuppy 12-20-2011 10:22 AM

The only time I leave a tip is when the hotel room gets trashed due to a bachelor party. Not that that would ever happen to me......

Zeke 12-20-2011 10:34 AM

Now when it comes to tipping, I will leave something even for one night. But if for more than a day, I will make sure to leave something daily as the crew might not be the same every day. (I mean I hope they don't work 7 days a week, but probably 6.) Just want to make sure everyone gets covered because it's a minimum wage job. They probably don't pick up even 50 bucks a day in tips.

I'd like to clean the top floor suites, though. ;) :D

BRPORSCHE 12-20-2011 12:05 PM

How about office?

I occasionally work late and have gotten to know the cleaning crew. I am going to make sure they get a xmas tip from me on Thursday. I guess I feel obligated?

Funny you mentioned this. I just gave the cleaning lady at the office an envelop for Christmas. I'm always the last one at the office and she's always friendly. One time I dropped the key to my Carrera heading for elevator. Got down to the car and couldn't fine the key! As I headed back toward the elevator, she comes out with key in hand.

imcarthur 12-20-2011 03:38 PM

I have trashed rooms. But I usually leave them tidy. Make the bed? Are you joking? We often rearrange furniture, glasses, ice buckets between rooms etc etc. I book a lot of rooms every year. You use them & then you don't.

Ian

imcarthur 12-20-2011 03:47 PM

And tipping? No. I can't expense it. Yeah, cheap bātard, I know. But I fill that room off season. I fill that room when nobody is traveling for fun. Business travelers like me keep them working year 'round. I already have 120 room nights booked (for me & others) in 2012.

Ian

roadsterswap 12-20-2011 04:03 PM

You drive a Porsche.

Oh Haha 12-20-2011 04:05 PM

It must be something about being Pelican as I do the same things.

Restaurant-pile the dishes/trash neatly so it's easy for the server to carry away

Hotel-pick up any trash, straighten up the bed(s), tidy up the bathroom

Work-I have always kept a neat office. I subscribe to the "clean desk" policy. My work truck is another story. I share it with another employee and he is NOT into being neat.

I also need to tidy up the house if we are going away for more than an hour or so.

MY cars are also always neat and tidy. I keep the outside of my wife's vehicle clean. The inside of it is hers to deal with. I gave up on that long ago.

Buckterrier 12-20-2011 04:29 PM

In a hotel room as I type. As with most I don't trash the room but I also don't clean up. You're taking someones job if you do!!!

Oh and Seahawk... Thank you for saying "my Mom". Geez that drives me crazy when folks say "Dad", Mom" and I are buying a pick up, (Sydney). Who's friggin' Mom or Dad?????

imcarthur 12-20-2011 04:36 PM

Have you noticed that 99% of the time, the phone cord is wound around the phone? I think it is a maid's signal that the room is clean.

Ian
