Sharing music on a home network?
OK, I've looked at Apple and Microsoft. I'm seeking suggestions on the easiest way to accomplish the following, bear with me.
Is there a way to share music from a system that has Vista, where the music is located to an XP laptop. What I've read says you cant. Background: I bought a Sony Home Share wireless system that "talks to the laptop in one end of the house and I'd like it to see and share the music in the other end of the house via the home network. The laptop is WiFi and the other puter with the music is ethernet hard wired. The Sony Home Share speaker "talks" to the wifi laptop, but not the ethernet hard wired puter. I suppose I could buy a wifi transmitter for the hard wired puter and some kind of repeater to get a good signal boost. Does that make any sense? Thanks a bunch. ![]()

so, you need to be able to access the music on the hardwired Vista PC, from the Laptop, and then the laptop will stream the music to the Sony system?
I'd think that you could map a network drive on the laptop from the vista system. Then the Sony system would think that the stuff was on the laptop. Now, if it would run well, I don't know, but I don't see why that wouldn't work.

Yes, it does make sense Hugh. Yes, you have to make the wired computer wireless. A wireless router would do. A trick piece of software I have used on XP is AirFoil from Rogue Amoeba $25. You load it on both machines. One transmits & the other receives. You can use ANY audio playback program you wish: iTunes, Album Player,FooBar etc etc. I have even used it as a source at shows. Or I could be wrong & the computer whizzes will solve it.

I figured it out! I clicked share on the XP one and it found all 2500+ songs on the other puter, everything said it wouldn't work, but it is. It wasn't an issue with iTunes, but windows media player which is what the speaker needs to run. I may still do a wireless so that I'm not dependent on the old cheap laptop.
