I'm confused. On my iPhone 4S all Google Maps does is give me a list of maneuvers and a map. When I arrive at the place for the turn, the app doesn't say anything. If I'm not watching the blue dot on the screen, I don't know it is time to turn. Am I missing something?

I end up having to hold and peer at the screen. It feels unsafe, and with all the accidents caused by smartphone use while driving, I think it is time for me to find a safer solution.
Do any of the TomTom, Navigon, or Ware solutions mentioned have all of these:
- Store maps locally
- Auto recalculation
- Turn by turn
- Spoken directions

Huh? Other than storing maps locally Google Maps/Navigation does all of that on my phone. Plus, I can give it verbal commands like "Navigate to 123 Main St."

Download "Telenav" from I-tunes. As I recall, it was less than 5 bux and works great.

MotionX and Motion X Drive are outstanding apps, I would highly rate both programs

Yep! Been using Waze since before Halloween and it really has come in quite handy. The "slow traffic and road construction" notification feature is priceless here in Atlanta. :D

Wow, lots of choices. I'm trying TeleNav and Waze now.

I used Waze today, driving from Yakima to Portland. Worked a treat. The UI is a bit like Power Puff Girls, but it was intuitive.

However, a couple of times, we lost signal and the app was useless. This wouldn't be a problem in an urban area, but in rural WA state, losing signal is not uncommon. I may try one of the GPS nav apps that store the data locally.

The other issue is that the constant GPS use sucks down the battery, by about 10% every 1/2 hour. If plugged into the car charger, with Waze running, the iPhone will only charge maybe 2-5% every 1/2 hour - i.e. the 12v charger will barely keep up with the power consumption. I'm going to look into more powerful 12v chargers.

I've been looking for the same thing, my trusty Garmin needs a $50 maps update (couldn't find my wife's sister's new house in Tucson) and I'd prefer to buy an iPhone app with on board maps and ditch the additional device. So far I've only found the TomTom and Garmin that offer turn by turn and on board maps. Both are about $40, the Garmin seems to get better, though still mixed, reviews. One big pro for the Garmin in my book is the ability to use it on multiple devices at no extra cost, my wife has an iPhone as well and Tom Tom seems to require a subscription per device.
