What's The Best iPhone Navigation App?
 

Is there a good iPhone GPS navigation app with turn by turn directions, essentially equivalent to a stand alone nav device? Any you'd recommend? This is specifically for driving.

Mapquest, and its free.

I've been using maps on my phone and the iPad this trip. Only time it's gotten us lost is when we were given a bad address.

I thought you just asked Siri.

Google maps is what I've used for years with no problems.

Mapquest works well

I use Waze. It notifies you of slow traffic and road construction on your route. I like those features if your headed to work and can take an alternate route.

I have the TomTom app. Expensive, but it works beautifully.

And the Road Goodies you can pick up on the road and being able to let others know when the are hazards or police ahead.

NAVIGON is what I use but the best apps are the ones that store the maps on the phone. That way it doesn't have to have a good 3g connection to work nice thus not gobbling up tons data and will still work if you lose the signal. The Navigon is close to 2gig but it smooth and has this great auto zoom feature based on how fast you are going.

iPhone does not have GPS built in?

My $45 a month no contract Nokia E71 on StraightTalk has GPS.

I do not understand why people pay a great deal more for Apple products unless they use them in the graphic arts field.

Same here. it was a ripoff when it was $100. I broke down when it was $50. Totally worth it.

I use Google Maps but it isn't a great nav app for driving. No automatic recalculation. No turn by turn directions. No audio directions. I end up having to hold and peer at the screen. It feels unsafe, and with all the accidents caused by smartphone use while driving, I think it is time for me to find a safer solution.

Do any of the TomTom, Navigon, or Ware solutions mentioned have all of these:
- Store maps locally
- Auto recalculation
- Turn by turn
- Spoken directions

MapQuest works pretty well, & as others have said, it's free!

TomTom has all of those. You could pay for traffic (~$12.00 / year?) as well (which would be considered in route calculation) but I have not done that.

MotionX GPS is awesome. Turn-by-turn voice guidance requires a paid plan.

Huh? Other than storing maps locally Google Maps/Navigation does all of that on my phone. Plus, I can give it verbal commands like "Navigate to 123 Main St."

Yes iPhone has a built in GPS but unless the maps are stored on the phone like the more exspective app, all you get is a dot if you lose a 3 G signal.
