Dickie's BBQ - the real deal?

Hey Nathans_Dad or other folks in Texas...is Dickey's any good? They're opening up one around here (in the middle of Lexington BBQ (pork) country) and I can't wait! The website states they still use wood...I'll be shocked if they do that here! Soooo...are we getting "real Texas Q", or are they planning on feeding folks that don't know any better ?

Don't know...most "real" Q joints around here use Hickory, but almost all new places use gas and that disqualifies 'em immediately for me!

Lifted this quote from their web site

"We have been smoking our meat with hickory wood over night at every Dickey’s location since 1941. Some other folks cut corners with liquid smoke or spices that may taste like smoke, but we don’t. You can count on that."

Isn't there some authentic NC Q place in Winston-Salem? I went to a place there some years back.

I don't know if it is authentic Texas BBQ, and frankly I don't give a shiat.

The one I used to live near is excellent.

It's real and it's good but it's not great. We may just have too many old BBQ shacks around that a chain store just does not get as much respect.

...and don't start on beef vs pork.

It's surprisingly ok. Not my 1st choice for BBQ. Have plenty of mom n pop places to go to instead.

Portions are adequate.

I have a hard time resolving the semi fast food environment.

Well if you are near the airport then I'd recommend The Feed Store on White Chapel in Southlake or Bartley's in Grapevine. If you want "scenery" with your meal there is Bone Daddy's also in Grapevine.

There is a Dickie's near my new office in Alpharetta. Very good brisket and sausage and free self serve soft ice cream for desert.

There are still at least a couple of "good joints" in W-S that have been around for decades Ian, one is worthy of making the drive when I need a "fix". Gimme a shout if you're ever in this neck of the woods again! I hear what you guys in TX are saying about the "chain" vs. "shack" type of place...same applies here for pork, 'cept there are no "chains" that I'm aware of. I'm not biased...I like 'em both equally well, but "pork rules" around here and you simply can't find good brisket etc. unless it's off my smoker. A Memphis style chain joint (Corky's) didn't last a year some time back...some people have no clue and it never attracted a following. Sooo...I'll try to keep my expectations in check as I wait for BEEF Q !

Not bad. There are worse and there are much better...

Hay Scott, have you tried the new BBQ off the 407 and 35 exit? Seems like there is always a new BBQ spot there at that place every year. Always cars out in front.

best place I ever went was on the North side of Houston, literally a little shack, glad I had a POS Ford Tempo at the time. I stuck out a bit, like a dove in a flock of crows, so to speak..

I have never been to a chain place that was all that good. Around here, Reds up near Auburn is not bad.

Dickie's is no where close to good BBQ. I'll throw a few others under the bus as well.

I can relate to both of these statements...when I lived in Jax, Fl years ago, there was a joint on the northside that I couldn't go to (according to a coworker), but she was kind enough to bring me some of da good stuff once

In Atlanta, head down to the One Star in Buckhead. Sorta Texas style. It ain't pretty, but it is very good. The beef rib - perfectly cooked btw - was a meal itself.

Keith: you're on.

I was in Corsicana two weeks ago and had some Dickie's and I thought it was pretty good.

The dive looking place painted Red next to the Valero?

I've contemplated going in there every time I pass but have not made it yet.

Both kids are playing soccer at the fields up there now so maybe we'll stop in after an afternoon game.

So far we've had nothing but f'n 8:30 AM games.
