a 1-2 passing

My dad passed away late last night. I didn't hear the phone but his wife called again this morning. Thankfully he passed quietly in his sleep though the last year had been rough. I previously wrote my thoughts here: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/636780-autumn-moves-winter.html

Details will get sorted probably tomorrow (today seems to be a holiday for most) as he's already got a pre-paid funeral setup and there is a lawyer in charge of the trust. And in an odd and rather taxing coincidence my fiancee's mom passed yesterday late afternoon. She had been ill for some time and was in the hospital in Hong Kong.

None of this was unexpected. We went down to see him on Christmas day and he was able to say a few words but mostly he slept from the morphine. I talked with his wife every day after that as he wasn't able to talk on the phone any more.

It's funny because yesterday we went to the beach. It was near 80 and beautiful, and a bit of a swell was running. We hit the water but the kids went back in after about 15 minutes as it was fairly cold. I stayed out because the waves were decent and I was enjoying the fact that I was still able to do this. Riding a wave is a magic and timeless bit of chaos and joy that is here for but a moment and then passes.

God speed dad. 1925-2012

Sorry to hear this sad news Todd. Even when we see this coming there is no way to really prepare for this passing. Its good that you and your G F have each other to help with the transition.

Todd,
I'm so sorry for your loss. You're a good son and I'm sure your father was/is a fine man to have raised you and you have many happy memories together. Hold onto those...

Sorry to hear of this, sounds like he was a good guy. 86 years is a good long life, in the old days it was almost unheard of. I talked to my Dad on NY day, he said that his goal is to make it to 80. (April '12). He has been in poor health for years due to cancer. He beat it but has never been close to the same.

It sounds like you are very much at peace with your Dad's passing which is good. You will miss him but I miss my, (young healthy), Dad and he's still alive. So it's relative...

RIP and thanks for sharing it here.

So sorry to hear this Todd. Even if you think you're prepared, it's still an empty feeling. But let me assure you, the feelings of pain and loss will eventually be replaced with fond memories of happy times. Every parent's wish is that their kids grow up well, and I think you did that just fine. Our thoughts and prayers are with you & the family buddy. take care.

My thoughts are with you Todd. You sound as if you're at peace with his passing, and that has to be a comfort. "As Autumn moves to Winter" is beautiful. My dad was born in 1925 too.

crustychief 01-02-2012 10:14 AM

Todd, I am sorry to hear of your families loss.
Regards,
Sandy

Rob Channell 01-02-2012 11:04 AM

My condolences to you and your fiancee. It's not easy to lose a parent.

Please don't take the following as condescending. I mean it with good intentions. I hope both of you take a little time now to grieve and get a little personal closure. Combine that with the memories of the good times you had with them and be thankful for the amount of time you had. It always could have been much less time and worse circumstances.

herr_oberst 01-02-2012 11:10 AM

My condolences, Todd.

lendaddy 01-02-2012 11:10 AM

I'm sorry for your loss, Todd.
It will be a time of begining life again with a part of you missing. Sometimes in terminal situations the person is ready and choses to go, and I hope this was so.
Godbless.

DonDavis 01-02-2012 12:00 PM

May he rest in peace. God speed.

fingpilot 01-02-2012 12:53 PM

Sorry to hear. He's free of his worries and pains. He knows now all the truths.

You'll catch him in your dreams soon. Let him know he's loved.

We all know every life comes to an end, but that doesn't makeit any easier for there is a hole where once a man stood in our life.

The true measure of a man is how well his children turn out. And mark my words if one does not go through the full monte of the grieving process at some point in life it will come back and bite one on the azz.
