Congratulations Tim! Have fun and stay safe!

Get Duke Southard's books. He'll teach you how to make it handle on dirt

Don't get me wrong, I used to love autocrossing a 240z/rabbit and often thought of building an ITB car, but road tracks like Mid Ohio are a long drive and a weekend of road racing costs much more than a Saturday night at the local dirt track. The local track charges $20 for a pit pass and no entry fee. They typically have around 60 Bomber class cars show up and end up running three mains after heat races... In the end the bombers all get a competitive "main" race with cars/drivers of similar performance. I don't care about prize money, but I think it is entirely possible even as a "rookie" to make enough to cover the pit pass and fuel to get there most nights. :D

As an ex competitive MX racer, the dirt cars will likely prove to be more driver dependant as opposed to many forms of pavement racing where those with the biggest pocket books are the only guys with a shot at winning.

You really should sell it so your wife isn't pissed any more. Then 6 months later buy another one. Then get divorced.

It's good to have a life plan...

Jim Richards 01-03-2012 10:32 AM

Where have I seen this particular plan put into action before? Hmmm...

recycled sixtie 01-03-2012 10:33 AM

Looks like there is lots of head protection in that car. Better live in it because if you step out of it your wife will nail you with something hard like a frying pan. :D Perhaps you like abuse. I don't and try to clear all major purchases with her before committing.

VINMAN 01-03-2012 10:35 AM

Awesome Tim. One of the things ive always wanted to do. Started building a street stock for our local dirt track a bunch of yrs back. But then got sidelined. Probably the cheapest form of racing there is.

futuresoptions 01-03-2012 10:36 AM

BTDT, Had a blast! Wishing you all the best Tim! I found when I was playing in the dirt that tire pressure was more critical than anything else. If you had your tire pressure right, you could run faster than cars with more HP....

I cleared it first.... I am not suicidal after all...:D

She just is really not happy with the idea probably mainly because she has been to the track and does not fancy the majority of the crowd that attends ;)

Having an upset wife does weigh down my excitement a bit, but I think it will work out in the end. I just need to avoid getting too serious with the racing. It is not worth getting a divorce over. :)

Here is a youtube video of an "A Main" (fastest group) Bomber race from last summer at the track I intend to race at.

My wifes a NYC girl. Designer clothes, shoes, dinner parties etc.. etc... When we were first dating I was still big into the offshore racing, which tends to attract a more"upscale" crowd. She loved it, fit right in.

Then I took her to a few local dirt track races. She was mortified. Especially sitting next to some 400 lb missing teeth woman in a spandex tank top, spilling her PBR on my wifes $300 shoes.. :D

We never once invited other racers over to the house. It's not like you have to become friends.

But the first time you weld up a cast aluminum piece for one of the others, you will be their good buddy. Meanwhile, do not mention Porsches and planes.
