RIP Blockbuster

I live in a town so backwards we still had a Blockbuster Video, until today. They are closing up. I grabbed a bunch of John Wayne and Kung fu movies. So many things not online.

They will be missed.

And a couple t shirts.

Most of those older movies can be found online through various means....

I also have the John Wayne megapack with every one of his movies so just send me a pm if there is one you are looking for. Also have the Cary Grant mega pack...

Really though, nobody is going to come knocking on your door because you pirated The Searchers.

Blockbuster had the exact right business model, until they didn't.

All business models are fleeting. My partner and I obsess over not becoming a buggy manufacturer.

They held on here because so many of us live in the boonies with **** Internet. I do 90% of my surfing at work. It’s a shame. I preferred scanning the shelves with my eyes for something different rather than waiting for an algorithm to suggest one.

Hopefully, that is not the one on Huffman. I was going there often last fall.

I suggest you go more often. These anachronisms need the business.

The demise of Blockbuster is the result of not paying attention to the Porters 5 forces.

P5F was discussed in my college econ/finance classes in the very early 80's...still relevant today.

The company I jointly own had our Shareholders Meeting yesterday and the principles of P5F and diversification of product lines were central themes of my presentation.

Sorry about the loss of your BB, Varmint. They were the King.

In meetings where people are adverse to technology, I always ask if they are planning to be Blockbuster. It always drives home my point.

The BB story is fascinating. Wiki does a good job: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blockbuster_LLC

Aside from the changing technology and incompetent leadership, Hollywood just let them down. Every time I went in there seemed fewer movies worth renting. Back in the 90s there were a dozen new films every Tuesday. Now all the talent has moved to tv or online.

My wife swung by and got six seasons of some show she likes for $50 and grabbed me a boxed set of Marx bros movies.

Today we go to the fair and watch blacksmiths and farriers to learn what life was like a century ago. I wonder if in the future there will be mock up video stores.

i worked for a company trying to be the next Blockbuster.

you know what i think killed them? every weekend hundreds of people would descend on the store looking for the latest, new video. we would get the latest DVD movie and a huge bunch..maybe 100 DVD's? (i cant remember volume)..if it was all checked out, they would wander around aimlessly looking for "plan B" or leave. most left.

you cant make a living only renting out what is new and great.

The wandering aimlessly was the best part. You found movies you’d have never considered otherwise. Also a great way to pick up women.

Now no one leaves their houses anymore.

Anyone watch Last Week Tonight? He did a hilarious thing to support the Alaska Blockbuster, and Russell Crowe one upped him, both episodes were hilarious

That's true. You know what would be a great idea? Let's get rid of things that are convenient, and instead make things more difficult, so that people have to leave the house. Ever since online banking the world has gone down hill. Nobody leaves their houses anymore!

Gone are the days I wasn't first at blockbuster and couldn't get the movie that I really wanted. I miss those times...
