and I thought Porsche restoration guys were a little nuts. Check out the project this guy took on after receiving a "free" POS boat. Nothiong like the smell of burning fiberglass and resin in the morning...

I stumbled upon the thread it while searching for a local boat of my own:

As the owner of almost the exact same Bayliner I can tell you they were from new bargain basement boats that sell for next to nothing today, even ones in great condition. But the guy obviously enjoyed the project. I liked this quote from him: "I joke that renovating a '94 Bayliner Capri is kinda like renovating a '90s Ford Taurus."

That dude is in for some serious work...speaking from experience...about 300 hours of fiberglass to do this...

Thanks Tim! The early tournament style boats (pre 1990) are super easy to work on...simple v-8 motor without emissions. The later boats are EFI with much more elaborate electronics..etc. If you end up looking for a tournament boat, I would look at the 1989 Nautique 2001 (this was first year of fiberglass stingers)..stay away from the older 17' hulls...they beat you up in rough water!!

That particular boat was always one of my favorite Correct Crafts...when the chance came to buy it I couldn't resist. After completing the fiberglass work I decided that it was too small for wakeboarding with more than a couple of people due to lack of storage....ended up selling it to a collector in Austin.

TimT...You got that right. I was in the marine business for several years in Ft. Lauderdale, when we saw a Bayliner we laughed or a$$s off. All that time and money and you still have a turd, a shinny tird, but still a turd. Go figure...

Gotta love it. I've spent way too much time and $ fixing an old sailboat. Complete false economy but I'm in deep now. Sometimes I wish think about beaching it and getting out the sawzall.
