how much ammo is enough (in storage)?
my brother is pretty cool. Walmart will occasionally send ammo to their grocery stores. corporate policy is to not touch the shipping box, and to call the police. he gets the call! PD cant use the ammo, so he sends out an email to "come and get it". but he seems to pounce on all the 9mm and 45 ammo right away. he saves it and gives it to me everytime i see him. i never get any high performance stuff..no hydroshox or anything..but the ammo is all over the place. i have about 1000 rounds of each caliber..and he just gave me two more boxes of .45. the hoarder in me, keeps taking it.
i shoot at the range, but i cant seem to get ahead of the ammo. i know this is a good problem to have. but what is your stash? what's the shelf life?

1000 each, sure, I could easily see doubling that, especially for free. Heck, for free, I could see having 5000 each.

I think my 30-06 is surplus from the 60's and 70's. Fires just fine.
Anything over a couple of boxes will be reported in the news as an arsenal. Don't be in the news.

I've shot .38 special leftover from when my grandfather was a cop. He left the force in 1951.
The way I see it, is I have my "primary" calibers and my "secondary" calibers. My primary calibers are what I want to have on hand when everything goes tits up. For me, those are 9mm, .223/5.56, and 12 gauge. I have multiple spoons that fire each of these. For me, there is never enough of a stockpile. My secondary calibers are the things that I shoot for fun that I don't think will be the most useful during the zombie apocalypse, like .17 HMR, .380, and pretty much everything else.

I have fired plenty of ammo from 50 's& 60's if the brass is corrosion free it should fine. I keep plenty in airtight ammo cans should be fine for 50+ years.

I need to load up. I don't think I have a box each of 33:30, 22, 9 mm or 12 gauge

A "box" is 1000 right? I'd be worried too.
![]() Did anyone watch the zombie show on History a few months ago? They recommended .22 Mag for zombies, stating that 9mm or .223 might be hard to get a supply of. Really?

I don't really carry stocks of ammo - so I'm impressed by you guys who do. I do reload however so can make some up pretty quickly.
Good on you Vash. I love stories like that. When I was a teen a guy I knew broke into an army building and stole a van load of .303 ammo. Phew he was using the .303 to shoot rats at the dump just to try and use some of it up. Some of it was tracer which was fun to fire at night out to sea LOL. |

1,000 is PANICK level!
![]() THIS IS NOT MY PIC OR STASH. I LOVE my wife. While watching TV during Hurricane Katrina Joanna asked "How much ammo do you have" not enough dear, not enough... ![]() On thing that I would recomend is to have more than one place for your stash. I have some in the safe, some in the garage and some in the warehouse. It can't be stolen all at once. If your home burns it all won't burn at once. I need to start reloading. I have M1 Garands and they do not like anything other than surplus loads from 30+ years ago or loads that mimick them The powder needs to be a slow burn powder so that the op-rod won't get damaged and the like 150gr. projectiles running 2,750 fps. If anyone has any M2 Ball in 30/06 for sale let me know.

Take from this thread what you will....I am woefully under supplied on 30 30......I love my Winnie 94 and am dead nuts accurate with it.....one can never have too much ammo unless one doesn't have a place in which to stash said ammo far out of sight of their significant other...
Me, apparently I have to keep firearms away from SOs altogether.......I attract the wackos |
