I met my fiance on eHarmony. We're getting married in September.
Over the last 3 years (since getting divorced) I met a lot of women on line. Sure I met some duds and some fatties, but I also met some of the most amazing women I've ever dated. Women with PhDs, women who are stunningly attractive, women who get picked up on all the time in real life.
You're the man, so you've got to do the work. Whether that means picking up women at the bar, the gym, the bookstore or whatever. Don't blame the tool just because you don't know how to use it.

Met my fiancee on match - getting married in Aug. After my divorce I met a couple dozen women online over a couple of years. I probably had about a 10% response rate - meaning for every 10 women I pinged I got a reply from one. Out of that I ended up meeting maybe 30% of those, and had a second date with probably 30% of those. If you do the numbers that means you need to cast a pretty wide net in the beginning and it takes time and effort. But it was totally worth it. Like you I met a wide variety of women - some with "typical" careers, some entrepreneurs, writers, etc. I ended up at pre-Oscar parties due to women I met on match as well as traveling to foreign foreign countries.
There are a set of rules that I evolved during that time and I posted them on one of the previous threads about online dating.
