knife question for "miss manners"

a lady in my office was horrified. she bought a burrito. for those that dont know..a california burrito is retarded. HUGE. beans and rice are IN the burrito. (took getting used to). she asked to the general office population, "this is too much, anyone want half?". one guy said "YES!"..he quickly washed his pocketknife in the sink..and cut the burrito in half. she looked horrified and said.."you can have the other half too".

knife phobia? germ phobia? knife guy bought her another burrito. i think she wanted to use the old germy knife rattling around in the dusty drawer.

is it rude or distasteful to use a pocket knife to hack apart food? i do it all the time. i wash my blade nightly with my evening dishes. kinda anal.

Overly fastidious, if you ask me...bacteria and virus doesn't live long on metal...

Probably a little bit of both. I've seen people there knife in places and do things that would keep me from ever letting them cut my food. I, like OP generally keep my EDC kife clean. A lttle run through soap and water and I eat with it no problem. I've also carried a knife every day for 30 or so years. I'll open it and use it front of anyone if the need arrises. You'd be suprised at the number of persons that just absolutely recoil in fear at the sight of a large knife.

I guess I'm a little spoiled living in MS and working in the south. Most folks around here never give a knife a second glance. Open carry of a handgun doesn't scare too many folks either.

Everyone knows the small, unobtrusive ones are best secreted on the body or displayed on the far right of the place setting.

Maybe it is the fact that he started fondling the food right away. It may have been better to let the person doing the "giving" cut it up their way. Sounds like general lack of communication. After deciding to share, they should have just talked about their plans on how to cut it up and the receiving person should have offered the knife.

My wife refuses food I cut with my pocket knife. That's only because I use the knife to break down anything I hunt, from big game animals to fowl and rattlesnakes.

I carry a Gerber multi-tool with me and I clean it weekly, but I don't think I would cut food with it.

The lady would hate me. Out on a job I cut food with a putty knife. Not even washed.

I've forgotten utensils for brown bagging too. I eat yogurt with the same putty knife if I have to.

In my circumstances, the English lady can then eat with her fingers. Try that with yogurt.

So she was fat huh? How fat? I mean was she sort pump and rounded or rotund? Maybe a pic? A pic of her smoking? Maybe a pic of her smoking on a bear skin rug? If she is willing to give up a mexiwrap what else will she give? Hmm?

I mean if she is Rubinesque then what the heck but if she is bubbling over in the lard well then its a good thing she gave him the wrap. Last thing she needs...

As with fingers, you don't know where a strange knife blade has been. Who knows, he might have just cleaned his finger or toes nails with it. Try that with your butter knife, then offer to spread the correct jam on your SO's bagel with it.

If it was washed before cutting the burrito....I don't see the big deal.

OTOH he could have asked her first if his pocket knife would be OK to use to cut it - given the burrito was hers in the first place. Just to be polite.

Hard to say more than that without being there and knowing the office dynamic and more about these two individuals.

The fact he bought her a new burrito makes me think he is a good person - he did the right thing.

Bottom line for me these days........no good deed goes unpunished....so live and learn!

The rule is always "you cut i choose". He should of used this common custom before filleting said burrito.

The knife was washed, no big deal. Maybe it comes from racing bicycle and taking 'hand ups' while racing or from camping, but I'm just not that wrapped around the axle with this stuff.

The lady would have had an aneurysm at my house at Christmas...

I needed to crack the whole black pepper. Not grind, I wanted a specific texture for the prime rib.

So I grabbed one of the body shop dollies, washed it thoroughly and had at it. Worked perfectly. I also washed it before I put it back in with the tools. If I had put it back in with pepper bits on it, Steve would have freaked!
