Unfair Advantage

By Mark Donohue.......

Any ideas about the value of a first edition autographed copy of Mark's book "Unfair Advantage"? The one that I have is signed:

Best Wishes
Mark Donohue

It is in excellent condition with a bit of edge wear on the dust cover. I bought it at a car accessory shop in Atlanta called "Automod" which was then owned by Brian Herndon. Probably in late 1975 or early 1976.

I like to go to Abebooks for first editions. They have a fair number of this book, although none are autographed. Check them out and then maybe list on ebay with a reserve. 0396070116 - AbeBooks

No idea of its value, but when you sell it let me know, would love to have it!

Too bad the binding is messed up - a booky would not give much for it but a car fan might. My guess, maybe $50.

You could easily get $250 on eBay or somewhere similar. Even in Pelican Parts classified you'd get a good price.

The first edition unsigned goes for a fair sum. Mine is in about the same condition, although unsigned and I picked it up for around $75 if I remember correctly and at the time that was a good price.

If you do end up selling, and Joe passes, let me know, I'd love to have it for my collection.

Cheers
Matt

p.s A bit morbid, but what makes this so rare is that Mark died a couple of weeks after the book was published. So very few were obviously signed.

I checked their list and found that Abebooks has two for sale at $700 each. Of course, they still have them which means they are likely overpriced. I would probably be willing to let my copy go for $500 or thereabouts.

Fred

The first editions normally go for around $150, that would be unsigned of course, which is why i thought I got a great deal at $75 for mine.

The signed copy could go for well more, as I mentioned, it's extreamly rare to find one signed.

If I was you. I'd stick it up on eBay, set a fairly high reserve and see what it brings. You might get bidding above $500. Signed photos of his go for around $150.

Good luck, I hope you get top dollar.

Another option is to give Morry a call at Collectors Studio, he has top notch motorsport collectables for sale and could give you a decent offer I'm sure.

Mark Donohue signed about 50 books in July 1975, just a few weeks before his death. He signed these at his Racemark store in Miami or Ft Lauderdale Fl. during the grand opening. I also have a signed 1st edition which was given to me long ago. Ordinary 1st editions were going for around $200 last time I saw one.

I'm liking this thread just fine. I've got one of those firsts, though it is unsigned.

I have an unsigned 1st edition as well. It's a great book. The chapter on the 917 can am development was worth the price alone.

I bought a signed hardback last October for 450 with a COA, just to give you an idea of value. The condition that that one is in, I would say could go for more.

Looks like a great book, and if I had the spare cash, I'd buy it from you.
