Value of Trek road bike
I know theres a few cyclists on this forum, so I thought I'd give this a try.
I bought this bike off a buddy of mine in 2004. Used the bike semi-regularly until recently, when a combination of new hobbies, and crappy CT roads has kept it sitting in the basement. I'm having trouble finding a similar one online to get a current price....any help? Any suggestions for location to sell besides CL and ebay? Chris ![]()

Bicycles and gruppos have come a long way since 2004. Ultegra is good but it's not Dura Ace. Depending on the condition/miles of the frame and wheel set I would say $1000 but probably less...like at $700 to $800. That era bike does not have a large fan base and well...it's old.

What the What?!
$700-800.....really? I find that hard to believe. My dad still has his 5200(Purple, before the Postal Service colors), and it was his Tri bike until recently. Those bikes are MFing cruise missiles. Early carbon that was(is) so, so good. Dutch auction the thing here! 57cm works for me. I spent a couple summers with my dads 5200 living in a suburb of Milwaukee. The countryside was only a few miles out. The beauty of the midwestern dusk, rolling across the farmland quick and quiet on that uber fast bike......heaven. |

Seems to be the range most people are asking for similar.

$700-800 sounds reasonable to me. Maybe a bit more if the drivetrain is in excellent shape.
Like David said, not everyone loves those OCLV frames. I think the most common descriptors for the feel of the frame are "dead" and "wooden."

I still have mine but I don't think I can get more then 700 bucks for it with full Dura Ace 9 spd. It is full of paint chips from throwing it around, and not really loved to much. I love the way it rides. I raced on it for two seasons.

Well, I will ad to that 'hard'. It was a stiff SOB. Creature comforts were not in their equation at that point. But it was light, and every stich of power you put down came out the other end. You could accelerate like on monster on it.

Predictable but dead feeling. I don't mind it. The guys make you suffer so bad that you forget that it feels like wood.

Creature comfort? Well, they are made for racing and racing only. F1 cars are not comfy. I agree with what you say 100%. You want a comfy bike, buy a sofa and sit at home. Those are one of the most comfortable frames I have ever ridden. My look KG 171 takes the cake on comfort. I can't understand why people who want a pure race bike and go and do a tour or century and complain about it being too uncomfortable? Yet, they want to get fitted for racing. SAme as saying I want a stripped out track prep 911 but use it to take my wife to dinner with it all the time but see no track time. Buy a freaking Benz for that. |

Thanks for all the feedback. Also appreciate the positive year identification. Probably will try for $800, and post some fliers at the local bike store and grocery store, in addition to craigslist. Pretty active cycling community around here, and hope to get it sold before the weather cools off. (with the funds coming just in time for the first engine drop this winter
