My mother is a secretary at an elementary school. A few years ago, there was a little girl who had the first and middle names "Tequila Sunrise"

fred cook 01-27-2012 05:21 PM

What's in a name????????

There was a kid here in elementary school who's first name was Orangejello. Yep that's right orange jello only it was pronounced O range ello with a long A. But you know, there's always room for (orange) jello!

My wife is a school teacher and I think I've heard the all but the two that she's mention recently are classics. How about La-A which is a girl's name pronounced "Ladasha". My wife's personal favor this year is a student's name spelled Vagina but I think it's pronounced Vigina.

Two more.....My first job back in the 90's was with Rockwell International and the Director's name was about Harry Wiener.

My wife reminded me of another student's name, GoGi which means "God's Gift"!

Then there's the sweet tale of how a young gal got her name. It was a long tradition that the offspring was named for the first thing the dad saw upon leaving the tepee after being with the mom. One day the young gal was asking dad how it was she had her name, and he said, "so why do you ask, Two Dogs Fu**ing?"
All right, that's an old one, sorry :D

Am at work and am entering "Emmaleigh"

I heard a funny story about an aviation safety consultant right after the F-18 crashed into a local neighborhood. Basically, a Military Officer that was part of the investigation was introduced to the woman after he had read her bio. He mispronounced her name, Le-a. She had a fit and said " it's ledasha! the dash ain't silent".

nice facets of racist email chains. snopes.com: Le-a

Evidently many of the parents described in this thread are not just making names up.
I did a quick search and found several websites with "the most popular African- American girl's names".
Looks more like a cultural trend than an accidental mis-spelling.

There is a great chapter in Freakonmomics about naming and impact on the child's future. The phonetic pronunciations of many of the names already mentioned, (such as S h ! theed: Sha Teed) had me rolling.

I worked with a guy from a third world country, cannot remember exactly where . But any how, his first name was Uda. He was funny, and I liked him. I knew him for several months before I discovered that his last name was Mahn. Uda Mahn!
