What are your favourite car mags...
and why?
My favourite US mag. is Automobile. Why? Radical writer Jamie Kitman is one of my favorite writers. However this mag. lacks older car coverage. For that my other favourite mag. is Classic and Sports Car, a UK mag. It is pricey here about $12 but in the UK about $7. And yours? |
Legshow with a Car & Driver cover taped to it to fool the wife.
|
Autoweek -- Great new car coverage, great vintage and collectible coverage as well as stories about readers' garages, etc.
Strong editorial staff and objective writing IMO. The "But wait, there's more" section at the back is typically hilarious as well. 3 year subscription best deal. |
Autoweek
Automobile European Car - soon to be non-renewed. Too much exotica/tuner stuff, too little project stuff. Didn't use to be that way. 87 blk coupe 11 GTI |
^that^ last one
Wayne, thanks for turning me on to GRM |
Motorsport, Car and Autoweek. The first two are British and exceptionally high quality IMO. I also used to get Automobile Quaterly but have let it languish.
BTW Automobile is the US derivative of Car. |
I like Excellence as well as Panorama. I used to get Hemmings Sport and Exotic car, but stopped a couple years ago. I might start again, as the price has fallen dramatically.
|
How could I forget Excellence??? My favorite. Eagerly awaited each month.
|
Road and Track (Peter Egan), Octane, Motorsport. Those are my all time favs. I occasionally pick up GRM, Evo, Vintage Motorsport, Excellence, etc...
|
I don't subscribe to any now, but my favorite was Auto Restorer Mag. (I think that was the name). It featured interesting restoration projects and informative and imaginative ways to accomplish things & solve problems as well as commentary on the performance of different products for repair & restoration. The only shortcoming was it featured very little european content and I don't remember seeing anything on Porsches.
|
Rod and Truck (Peter Egan and some vestiges of technical articles; used to be better)
Car & Drunkard used to be great but D E Davis is gone and those guys moved to Automobile which later declined. Excl. has run out of things to say about the old 911s & hot rods... I've gone to the trouble to hunt down some old articles by Jenks too... he has few peers |
Oh, magazine. Ok.
I was gonna say slot mags. http://blog.hemmings.com/wp-content/...5040654252.jpg Actually, I don't have any subscriptions currently, but I used to get VW Trends, Automobile, and R&T. I enjoyed reading Peter Egan's column, and sometimes Ezra Dyer had some entertaining stories. I had VW trends because I drive a VW, but for the most part, that magazine had sucked since the '80s. Now, they're gone on account of a bad editor, an angry car club, and an event sponsorship. |
"real" subscription magazines I get:
Road and Track (like Peter Egan, the saloon cars, history and Dennis S's tech articles) Autoweek "Club" magazines I like Panorama SportsCar (scca) |
I read Autoweek for years...starting back when it was in a newspaper format. I always enjoyed Satch Carlson's column. He was dropped and the magazine went into a long, slow decline. I read the English mags now. I like CAR...but this one is my favorite. Great writing and broad coverage of the classics, sports cars, auctions, vintage racing and other car-related topics. There are columns about watches and other items of interest to gear-heads along with articles about people in the car world...race drivers, tuners collectors, restorers, etc.

Excellence, only one I subscribe to.
|
Excellance
|
Like the OP, I like Automobile, usually pretty good articles, I still get a R&T once in a while and have pretty much stopped Car and Driver. Excellence is good.
|
I get C&D, R&T, Autoweek, Automobile, Excellence, Hemmings Motor News, & Hemmings Sports & Exotic Car. Favorites are Excellence & Hemmings Sports & Exotic. My wife tolerates me.
|
Automobile and C&D were my two most recent subscriptions, but I think they've lapsed. I'm a HUGE fan of the Evo iPad app, and might not ever subscribe to another print car magazine. There's nothing more cool than a magazine with embedded video, audio, extra pictures, etc.
|
Hemmings Sport and Exotic followed by GRM and GRM's classic car. I much prefer the older euro stuff and most magazines rarely if ever cover that segment.
