Interview and follow up protocol
Folks,
I did a telphone screening interview 1/23 that was supposed to go for a half hour, ended up being 40 + minutes. I felt it went very well and the interviewer told me that they would be setting up in person interviews starting this week. I did send the obligatory thank you email, but is it wise to send another just to see where they are in the process, or would that be a no no? Thing is, this job sounds like one that I would actually enjoy and I know I need to be wary of being toooooo enthusiastic. Tomorrow will be 10 days. Thanks

Go ahead and call. It shows interest and initiative.
If you are not going to get the job, that's already been decided so no harm.

It's been 12 years, but I sent follow-up letters to each person I talked to in an interview.

Yes. Something to the effect of:
"Hi this is Mr. Awesomeworker. Thank you again for the time we spent last week. I am calling to setup the time for the in person interviews that we discussed on the phone last week. Do you have time to discuss availability?" etc...

Every two weeks, let them know you are still alive.
That is not annoying. They might have already groomed someone. You don't know. Eventually, you will get a person to person interview. That is where you really have to "sell yourself". I have always been a good BS'r and telling the truth too but person to person is the best way to secure employment. Keep reminding them that you are still interested at two week intervals. One way or another, they will tell you what is on the horizon. Good luck. |

From my experience, if they're really interested in you then they'll keep the ball rolling. The company always seems to disappear after a phone interview if they're not interested. They won't answer calls or emails. Pretty rude if you ask me. Why can't they just tell you that they're not interested if they're not so you can move on? *sigh*

The rule is to check in every 2 weeks until they tell you they are not interested any more. If you are antsy after 10 days, it would not be too early to send a message just stating that you wanted to make sure they know that you are still very interested in the job and ready to further introduce yourself in person.
The worst thing you can have as an interviewee or hiring manager is a passive candidate that isn't excited about the job and disappears where you aren't sure if they are even interested in the job. G |

If they didn't give you a timeline of when to expect the next call, I'd wait 2wks...
When I was doing the phone interviews for my internship, they'd always give me a time frame to expect the next phone call, and then a week before someone would call to schedule it. I never progressed to a face to face interview, purely because I'm about a thousand miles from the corporate HQ, and its just an internship. |

The interview and hiring process is taking longer then ever these days. I finally landed a job after first seeing the ad on CareerBuilder in October, interviews (3) in Dec and Jan and started 2 weeks ago.
Hang in there. If you don't make the cut, I found that most places will notify you. Some don't.
