Why do we like soft things?

What is it about touching something soft that appeals to us? Fluffy cats, mink coats, rabbits, they're all somehow soothing to stroke. Even cats like soft things - ours like to knead a soft fuzzy blanket.

How does this help us as a species?

this is a thread about boobies, right?

GH85Carrera 02-01-2012 09:26 AM

I would guess it is because the opposite is rough and painful. No one wants to hold a rough piece of wood with splinters. Sandpaper can cause your skin to be scraped off.

Amail 02-01-2012 09:35 AM

I dunno. Run your hand over a smooth desk and it's not nearly as gratifying as fur, yet it's pretty opposite of splinters and sandpaper.

I wonder if it has something to do with domestication of animals. Petting animals and cuddling babies releases some hormone or another in both the petter and pettee that is linked to bonding.

After going to our AGM of the condo building where we own a condo unit which we rent out(an over 50 age condo) and getting sworn at just because my wife and I own a unit. After I wanted to have something soft to touch like our pet -our black lab which passed away last March. The Bylaws allow us to rent out and there is just a handful that are rented out. There is nothing like a pet, dogs particularly that can give that unconditional love. Soft to touch.:)A devoted dog is the opposite of a hostile human(woman!!!!??).Thanks for hearing me out:eek:

i retired about a year ago and, since then, i've had the time and energy to really appreciate our dog and his companionship.

as well, i got The Twight Zone DVD for xmas, and watched this episode the other night:

Why dog is man's best friend - Twilight Zone Ep. - YouTube

thought you might be interested. sorry for any derailment...

Good question.
We are animals.
That sense of comfort is as old as the brain. :)

Amail 02-01-2012 12:07 PM

So, is it an affinity for other mammals? Not very soothing petting slugs or fish. Neither is it soothing petting pigs. Soft is the hook.

Cool Twilight Zone episode!

recycled, losing your pet is so hard. I always get choked up reading "Had to put Fido down" threads. They're all too common.

We had fur at one stage.

Babies were kept in fur long before blankets. :)

I like touching and stroking soft parts of a woman...

furry or not. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...leys/puppy.gif

I like touching soft boobies

Amail 02-01-2012 12:30 PM

But you gotta admit (in public at least) touching and stroking soft parts of women doesn't elicit the same response as stroking a soft furry animal.

Mark Henry 02-01-2012 12:35 PM

I'm glad my wife likes one hard thing.:)

red-beard 02-01-2012 12:37 PM

Maybe in Montana or Idaho or the Outback...or New Zealand...
