Just look at it as a challenge to your manhood. Win or light it on fire. The Westy, not... nevermind. Looks like you're well on your way to winning.

no the HOT setup is a 3.2 911 engine, and poo can all the wasser related crap. these damn things are worth a freeking boatload. gowesty had one for 54K bucks! YIKES! yep a synchro westphalia 4wd w/camper top stove refrig blah blah all decked out same as ours.

parts prices no different than a 911 and some actually more expensive.

a guy here has a subie conversion and all the bumpers tubed out. pretty nice actually.

if you have to take the fuel tank out(like us)................well just plan on wanting to slit yer wrists when completed.

every bushing replaced on it.............EVERY BUSHING replaced with polyurethane bushings. it rides real nice now.

westies were known for (2) things:

1) melting down due to wasser leaks

2) burning up due to oil leaks.

we went with ALL NEW HOSES and the stainless pipes front to rear.

when you are finally done and have filled the system with coolant. jack the front end up, fire engine to 2000rpm and bleed air out of front radiator. you will do this for some time trust me. we made a crappy lil funnel and some small motorcycle fuel line to fill radiator as the dum ass krauts didnt figure on proper size(bigger) of front radiator bleed.

the 3.2 works fine with the air cooled westy, with the water cooled you should use the Subaru. I had one with the 2.0 Subie, my friend has the six Subaru in his. Scary fast for a Vanagon. Here is an air cooled with a Porsche, not mine.

and an early air cooled with a Porsche

Can you please move that engine out of the way and show us more photos of the Dornier? All I can see is the horizontal stabilizer and the tailwheel.

I LOVE Westies! And so does my Pekingese. Although, I do like my Peke's fluffy fur better than the Westies' hair.

Syncro westy - meh. The sycros have softer suspension and sit higher than the the standard 2-wheel drive vanagons making the additional roof weight (of a westy top) an even worse (tippy) situation.

And what's with the engine swaps? --it's still a freaking BARN on wheels. Even if you have the HP to push the thing at 90mph the gearing isn't right.

Don't get me wrong, the syncros ( I own one) are indeed the Porsches of vans other than the the fast part. Aerodynamics of a big brick. The aero power needs to push a brick faster go up exponentially wrt speed - iirc. The stock push-rod motors are enough, imo. Tough too.

You & Ferry are in agreement.

Just remember VW's are designed by GERMAN engineers...

BUT they are the worst, cheapest engineers in Germany.

As quality design & build goes, the Vanagons are well above the typical GTi / Jetta. That is, they are heavy duty commercial grade, by comparison.

Paul - isn't a 911 fender-mounted oil cooler a "radiator in front" ?

Ah, he was just quoting what someone else said.

I have a friend that had a Suby powered Westy that got totalled last year. He went and bought a stock one, the one without the full camping conversion, but has the flip top box. I guess there's a name for that, he's always trying to teach me all the iterations.

So now he wants to convert this one and has been researching everyone from GoWesty to people way up in the PNW. Stupid expensive.
