Anyone here collect license plates?

It seems like there are people here who collect or are experts in just about every area I can think of, and even some I can't think of! My friend has been collecting license plates for about 60 years or so and was one of the first members of the Michigan License Plate Collectors Club and has an incredible collection. He's 85 and losing his eyesight and eventually he'll ask me to help him sell his collection. I know there are a lot of online resources for this, but I wanted to check here 1st to see if any of you folks collect license plates. He has sample plates, special numbers (like "0000", matching sets from the 1st porcelain, leather, etc... plates ever made in MI and very interesting things, like window stickers that were used as plates during WWII and stuff like that. His basement and garage are literally full with boxes and boxers of license plates.

He also collects paper money and has uncut sheets of paper money...

I have a small collection but my dad has collected every state, every possible year for Oklahoma, many indian tribes and specialty plates, a lot of motorcycle plates and several sets of of the Honeycomb Cereal bicycle plates. My brother also has a pretty good colection and runs a 1968 "Drivers Education" plate on his 912.

Art,

I have most of the license plates from most of my cars for the past 40 years. In several cases the plates went with the cars before I had a chance to rescue them. I need to lay them out and take a pic.

We have most of the plates from different cars that have rolled across the place. Some from when we bought the car if they were still on when we go it. We have a variety from the mid '80s too when my dad had a used car lot.....

I have around 150 or so. Mostly Texas stuff from family member's barns, old cars we found in the woods when I was a kid... things like that. Some of the stuff you described sound crazy expensive though. For me it's all basically garage art rather than something to seek out and collect.

Yea, my friend was/is a "serious collector", but now he can barely see (macular degeneration) and he's 85, so he'll be asking me to help him sell his collection at some point. I've helped him sell a bunch of WWII stuff and we haven't even made a dent in his collection...

I have an accidental plate collection, nothing really significant, but had some really old plates that I found when my grandfather passed away, and I will save out of state plates, and collector plates whenever the opportunity presents itself. I probably have close to one hundred, not displayed, just in a box some where

I know someone who has the Oregon version of your friend's collection. I am pretty certain he is done with this and has moved on to other pursuits.

It will be a learning experience to organize, sort and ID all of this stuff, then get bids from collectors and get it all sold for him.

Folks like this are the biggest customers of the antique plate dealers you see at swap meets. It's cool to match the plate style to the car...

I only collect what I drove and hang them on the garage wall. It has grown a lot until I moved to CA where the plates stay with the car.

The great thing these days is that you take a good set of pictures, write a good description and you are guaranteed a fair price on Ebay. License plates sure will lend themselves well to being shipped too.

Can you post a pic of the leather plates? I saw some recently. Cool story behind them.

The boys from the " Pickers " show bought a letter plate the other day. Interesting.

No other help than that.

Maybe call those guys.

only have plates from the vehicles i've owned or stripped, so nowhere as serious of a collector. One day they'll all go up on the garage wall.

Any affordable guns from the WWII colection (if there is such a thing?).

I'd like to get my first spoon one day.

Back to your regular programming...
