Who scripts the stuff that goes on inside your head at night?

I was thinking about this this morning laying in bed. I've had a run of extremely lucid dreams lately, and have had the opportunity to contemplate them in the morning... probably because I've been taking an hour or so to actually get out of bed lately.

Anyway... if you think about it, what's happening in your noggin is pretty amazing. You have a succession of dreams, each with its cast of characters, their dialogues, locations, emotions, physical sensations, etc. Its every bit as rich (if not more) than a Hollywood multi-million dollar production, which takes a cast of hundreds or thousands to pull off. Yet, your brain whips this stuff up every night, multiple times. I think that's pretty incredible. Makes you wonder how much time your mind actually takes to conjure it up... or maybe its instant, which is all kinds of awesome!

Someday, we'll have a wireless transfer of the night's proceedings waiting for us on the laptop when we wake up for review. Cool!

One dream I had a few years ago is the inspiration for a book I'm writing. Whether or not I attempt to get it published in another matter.

The only thing I recall about last night's dream is that in it I apparently forgot to crimp some .223 rounds and it was causing my rifle to jam as the bullets slipped into the cases and wouldn't feed properly...right as I was being overtaken by zombies.

legion 02-07-2012 11:30 AM

Oh, and I still have some dreams I clearly remember from when I was in kindergarten. I do have some re-occuring themes, but I'd hate to give the pop-psychologists more fodder.

Burnin' oil 02-07-2012 11:30 AM

My dreams are silent with black and white stick figures.

krystar 02-07-2012 11:31 AM

i want to produce into a short movie some of the dreams i've had. i got a couple of the recurring ones written down and filling in details as they happen again and again.

i have a short recurring one that has nazi's and kar98k. another one that has mecha-hitler. pretty rad heh

asphaltgambler 02-07-2012 11:41 AM

My understanding is your subconcious mind "works out" your stress, hope, fear, anxiety, fun times that your concious mind goes through all of your waking hours. It's the minds way of breaking down these things that seem to play like a short film to deal with or compartmentalize those experiences that really affect us. My $.02

GH85Carrera 02-07-2012 11:42 AM

I often have whatever is the opposite of a nightmare. Maybe a night-funny? Sometimes I wake up giggling.

john70t 02-07-2012 11:48 AM

I think you lose 90% of the memory within 10 minutes, so it has to be written down asap.
We usually have 3 REM cycles which are about 3 hours each.
Dreams actually usually consist of combinations of known things in different configurations. I think it's a way for the brain to check it's wiring.

Back in H.S., I'd wake from a dream 1-10 minutes before the dreaded alarm went off.

svandamme 02-07-2012 11:50 AM

I usually get really weird scenario's, like some kinda of bat **** crazy road trip, and my buddy for the road trip is a dude i know, and hated back in High School and haven't seen or heard off in 20 years. And in the dream, we seem to be getting along like super best friends forever!

The really funky ones, i get them when i'm feeling pretty good, and don't have any bad stress going on.

I also got lucid dreams every once in a while, the "i'm superman" kinda movies, where nothing ever goes wrong.. and it it does, it doesn't affect me. Like missing the turn with the car, but missing the tree and finding another road on which i can keep driving.. Those are teh fun ones, when i the alarm goes off,i can snooze it, put my head down, and keep going in the same dream, full control where i go with it..

Couple nights ago I came around a corner very fast on my motorcycle... too fast... hit a red SUV head-on and went flying into the air, like 200 feet up. The sensation was so real. I've had many dreams of dying before, but I can usually realize its just a dream within a few seconds. This one totally fooled me. As I was flying through the air, feeling the violence, temperature change, wind, etc, I was totally convinced that this one was the real deal, and my life was over. I flew for perhaps 10 seconds, then realized it was a dream only after I had woken up, and was super pumped on adrenaline. Not many fool me, so this one's been bugging me for a few days.

stomachmonkey 02-07-2012 12:35 PM

I used to get the drowning ones.

Would bolt upright in bed and gasp for air.

When I was young, 6 yrs old maybe, and I got sick I would have this recurring dream of being pushed/squeezed thru an ever narrowing tube. Hated that one. Always wonder if I was recalling being born.

johnco 02-07-2012 12:48 PM

my grandfather's old friends used to dream elaborate plans for toys and games, wake up and jot it all down for later. I've seen many of his blueprints and drawings that were later sold to toy companies like Hasbro, Ideal, etc. interesting man with interesting stories. one of the survivors of the Indianaoplis sinking and all those sharks. he didn't talk about those dreams.

legion 02-07-2012 12:49 PM

Try this one on...

In most of my dreams, I'm still 16. It doesn't make any sense. I recall going to college and having a job, but somehow I'm transported back. In many of them, I have to go back to high school or college because I never really graduated. All of my former classmates are still in high school or college too. I still live with my parents or in the dorm. My dad is still alive. Sometimes it's just me hanging out with my current friends. Lots of zombie dreams lately. I notice the inconsistencies almost immediately. I always recall an episode of the animated Batman show where he realizes he is in a dream because he can't read or write, and I read something and decide the dream must be real.

Any dream that goes on long enough inevitably turns very dark. Most usually have someone chasing me and trying to kill me, usually my father. Sometimes it's a mystery and I have to figure out who is trying to kill me. I never do. Either way, I get away by flying. I fly by swimming the sidestroke. Sometimes I get caught in power lines. I usually wake up when I'm in mid-air. I'm usually sweating, heart thumping, and terrified when I wake up. I've been having this dream since I was 5. Oddly, it doesn't affect me much at this point. Having such a dream doesn't ruin my day, or make it better. I usually go back to bed and hope I dream about the cute chick at the office.

THE URGENCY OF CHANGE 'DREAMS'

tabs 02-07-2012 02:23 PM

Taking a stroll one hot summers day I came across a field of tall grass. I decided to lay down in the grass where I fell asleep. I began to dream that I was the star of a Hollywood movie, Hmm me a star of a Hollywood movie. That really blew my mind that me a long haired leaping gnome could be the star of a Holywoood movie. I was stripped naked standing on a mountain top before me was every kind of girl, large ones, round ones, Brown ones, Black ones, tall ones CRAZY Ones...

Do they at least have melodramatic music with them?

My favorite animated movie. I've laughed at this one for years now. Thanks for posting :)

Last night I dreamt,
That somebody loved me.
No hope, no harm
Just another false alarm.

Last night I felt
Real arms around me
No hope, no harm
Just another false alarm.

One reoccurring night mare for me is that I'm back in college and realize I have finals in a class I signed up for but that I accidently forgot to drop.

But I'm up too early for dreams anymore. My wife has them, and when she wakes up she gives me dirty looks and says, "How dare you!"

Your brain is telling you to lose the funny red wig. Probably the avatar too, lol.

speeder 02-07-2012 03:32 PM

Yeah, dream life is great. There is a whole field of study for artists, (performing and otherwise), that involves "dream work". A simplification is that you keep a notebook next to your bed and write down your dreams before you forget them in the AM and then reference them for the answers to questions you have about your work. There is also an aspect where you ask your SC to provide you with these answers before you crash for the night, and then hopefully the dreams might deliver something for you.

There was a pretty famous acting coach named Sandra Seacat that is a big practitioner of dream work. Lots of famous actors were studying with her back in the late '80s, not sure where she is now. I'm sure that this might sound goofy to some people but dreams contain a massive amount of info that is of use to creative people. The toy inventor story doesn't surprise me a bit, I'm sure that other inventors had visions and inspirations come to them in dreams.

I guess you dreamed you were Eric Burdon.

I try to program my dreams. I like the ones with great looking women.
I guess we know what that says.

Seriously, whenever I had a big job in construction or remodeling, I would dream about what was about to be done and how to do it. Not that I needed any ideas, but you know, the next day did seem to be pretty organized what with the night before run through.

Morgan Fairchild.................geez I almost need a restraining order to keep her out of my dreams.........

......almost......I'll suffer in the mean time.

I have very vivid dreams, very vivid nightmares, too, unfortunately....

smokintr6 02-07-2012 05:04 PM

I've been having a lot of dreams lately.

I have a great deal of frustrating dreams, usually trying to accomplish something with no luck.

Often people are chasing me with the intent to do harm, they are usually shooting at me. with these dreams I am almost always armed with a hand gun. I take aim and either the gun won't fire, or i shoot and hit target over and over, with no effect.

I recently had a dream that I was flying in the back of a small biz jet with an old friend, and the pilot stalled us into a forest. I was fairly convinced this was real. I snapped awake just as the wings started to brush the tree tops.

dennis in se pa 02-07-2012 05:06 PM

I dream in color. I have heard you dream in black and white, but I dream in color. Sometimes the next day I can remember specific colors. Anyone else experience this?

Embraer 02-07-2012 05:09 PM

i had a dream a couple of weeks ago about a completely new avant garde bicycle drive train system. i jotted it down when i woke up, and it would completely work. other than a different way of doing it, there seems to be no benefit. it would just aesthetically be awesome.

the other day i had a dream that i saw an ex-gf (except in the dream, we had never dated before) at a cupcake bakery back home. we were chatting in line, and she gave me her phone number. i remember it saying "910-xxx-xxxx" i asked her where the heck area code 910 was...and she replied "oh, i just moved here from north carolina."

when i woke up, i looked up that area code, and sure enough it is from north carolina. consciously, i have never seen that area code before. it was kind of weird.

Vipergrün 02-07-2012 05:23 PM

I use to solve accounting reconciliation problems in my sleep. I'd wake up with the answer, go to work the next day and bingo. Happened several times...weird. Guess my mind was working overtime.

Hugh R 02-07-2012 07:13 PM

I don't like my dreams, too many bad memories.

tabs 02-08-2012 01:12 AM

Everything you have ever seen, experienced, touched, heard etc is in that filing cabinet known as the Sub Conscience. If a piece of information is needed it is pulled out of memory and sent to the conscience mind.

The sub conscience mind is in essence a CPU, constantly organizing data, filing data and connecting pieces of data from which logical conclusions are drawn. Further on a genetic level there is a universal connection between all humans.

We access the subconscious through our dreams, imagination and feelings. All of which is subjective or qualitative in nature. Thus transcendental in nature.

I covered most of this territory almost 40 years ago...in other words I am very familiar with the imagery of the sub conscience and know very well how to load my words with meaning that resonates into the depths of what I term to be deep blue or the sub conscience brain. Symbolism one might say is a speciality of mine.

The empiricists among us would be foolish to deny the reality of the sub conscience brain and the imagery that arises from it. One should not think of those images in terms of being the meaningless irrational meanderings of the mind but give credence to the importance of what those images are telling us. In the end it enriches our lives as it gives us depth of character

I have a long-standing, recurring twighlight/semi-lucid experience that looks/feels like I am a living homunculus...I welcome it as it is so unlike anything else when it occurs...and no it is not induced by injestion of recreational substances.

Had a couple surgeries in the last couple years and was prescribed Vicodin for pain. During the first 3-4 days of taking it each time, I could direct my dreams as I wished. It was wonderful.

She is right, but then again she has to decipher the imagery...The subconscious does not deliver things at face value. One has to think about sub conscience imagery as a foreign language that needs to be translated
