Toyota Bear Trap

Didn't work out so well.

Three year old griz somehow found himself trapped inside this Toyota. Story says his thrashing about set off two air bags. Looks like that might have firghtened him.

I don't blame the poor little bugger. I've been in cars a few times when the airbags went off and it scares the crap out of me!

They should employ the bear at the wrecking yard to prepare cars for the crusher.

It blows my mind that a bear can just walk up to a car, bend the door frame down, and hop in. That kind of strength is insane.

Yeah, I saw photos of a minivan parked in Yellowstone that had the sliding door peeled back like one of those tuna or sardine cans we used to roll the key around to open. A bear had gotten its claws in the gap between it and the body and had literally rolled it back on itself, folding it over.

In the case above, however, the ripped door is the "exit wound". Poor guy hopped in through a door that was left open, and somehow it closed behind him. Either the back window flip-up hatch, and it fell shut, or a passenger door and the wind blew it shut, or something like that. The story wasn't clear. It did state, however, that there were no signs of "forced entry". The damage was all an "outie" rather than an "innie".

the best bear entry to a car story I know is from ye olden days of Jellystone - Park biologists told it to me as true...

the VW bug was advertised as being nearly air tight if you guys recall that; put that together with feeding bears in the Park (which gets them to associated people & cars with food)....

the rangers kept finding cars "broken into" and trashed -- oddly the cars were VW Bugs -- so some of them did a stake out in the various parking lots

they saw a bear amble out like he owned the place, casually crawl right up on top of a Bug and then do a trampoline bounce on the roof -- only the VW had the rounded arc shaped roof, whcih promptly caved in and the doors popped open

the bear climbed down and went in thru the door to his feast

reminds me of my neighbors minivan that somehow locked a chipmunk inside the van overnight. There was not a salvageable piece of interior in that car and the wire harness was chewed up. The van was totaled by the insurance company.

Year later they had a new van, kids left a granola bar in the car that peaked the interest of a local black bear. Luckily the car was unlocked so the bear was able to open the door without damage however he/she ended up shredding the rear seat, tearing out the center console and ripping out the glove box in search for more sweets.

Oh oh oh - wait a minute! JEFF posted the story about the bear. So Jeff, tell us, does a bear trapped in a Toyota "Higgins" when the airbag deploys?

(you know I'll NEVER let you live that down).

Hell, I would...

It did say he left a pretty healthy steamer in there. If he did it in true Higgins fashion, that's probably what set off the air bags.
