Greetings from Poipu, Kauai

Hey all, Just wanted to say howdy from Poipu, Kauai.
My wife decided to surprise the heck out of me and fly us here for my 50th birthday. (23rd) It ablsolutely blew my mind when I found out.
We've been to Maui (Kihei) before and this is totally different. The weather can change from moment to moment. Today was beautiful! Snorkeling in the AM and then a drive to Nawiliwili and lunch at Duke's. Back in Poipu now enjoying a nice glass of wine.
Cheers!

Thanks Scott, LOL about the chickens. Today at Duke's they were coming right up to the table and waiting for handouts. Talk about being brazen! They are pretty birds though. I've been curious about how they got their start here. They are everywhere.

Poipu is awesome. Great sunsets, great waves, lots of tutles and yes- lots of chickens. Don't forget to keep an eye out for great rainbows in the afternoons. Kauai also has lots of great beaches to check out of you're feeling adventurous. Glass beach is a good example of one worth checking out for the novelty.

Best part of the islands, you lucky dog! Please go to the Old Koloa fish market, in my honor, and have a half pound of hawaiian-style poke, and a few sticks of smoked marlin. nomnomnomnomnom.

May I sagest after your drive to Princeville continue on to Hanalei then to end of the road hike to Hanakāpī‘ai Beach. Short hike @ two miles, each way. Well worth the effort!
Aloha, DS

Yup, Hanalei Bay is awesome. Plenty of sea turtles there and a great point break reef on the south end of the bay.

Aloha and welcome aboard Dan. Glad to hear that you are enjoying being here on Kauai.
Definitely lots to see and do while here. I'd be glad to share some local tips for your visit, you can reach me at 635 6671. I live allmost at the end of the road on the north shore. Maybe we can get together if you find yourself heading this way. Its a busy week for me as I have a pontential buyer flying in from the mainland to check out my sailboat. Also some major P-car projects going on as I have the engine and trans out of my SC. Hey do come by and do some wrenching.

Cheers Richard

Agree. If I ever get married again it will be on the beach above. Beautiful part of the world and well worth the trip.

I never have connected with the Pflueger family, I know they are into motor-sports in a big way, Jimmy's son Allan( I think it is) is into the Baja type off road racing. In unlimited trucks. And Jimmy was The Man who got the the now defunct race track built on Oahu years ago.
They don't seem to do much in a car related way locally

Thanks for all the suggestions. I know my wife and daughter have some plans already made for us. We are going to be going on a horseback ride / hike at some point. We are also doing one of the snorkeling trips. (not sure from where though) On the 23rd we are going to The Beach House in Poipu for my birthday dinner. Reservations are at Sunset with a window table. I may have to let the fat man in me out of his cage that night.
My daughter is part fish it seems and wants to be snorkeling every moment she gets. She and my wife got to swim with a large sea turtle yesterday. There was also a Monk seal that was lounging on the beach with us. It seemed oblivious to everyone around it and hung out there most of the morning. I guess it was a big deal. There was a guy from one of the television stations out there filming it. I'm trying to pace myself with the sun. I don't want to be a crispy critter.
My wife's business partner is going to be joining us here Friday and will be staying with us through the 25th. Should be interesting. He is used to staying in the resorts with all the poolside services...etc. We, on the other hand like to stay in condos and venture out all over the place.

+1 on Kauai... if I hit the lotto I would move there.

++1 on Hanalei... we always rent a house there.

+++1 on watch out for that tropical sun, I do all my snorkeling before 10AM and after 3PM, make the whole family wear sunscreen! No fun being lobster boy (or girl) In paradise.

Waimea is a nice hike for sure, as is the Hanekapi'ai(sp?) trail along the Nepali (sp?) Coast. Especially if you can make it all the way to the waterfall. There is a gorgeous beach(I know redundant) with a big azz pool, Queen sumthin' or other near these awesome cliffs. Great place to hang out. There is a Buddhist monestary on the top of the mountain that used to give tours. The grounds were stunning!

Just a note...

The Napali trail is on the rainy side and is very mossy and slippery... a family member slipped, broke his knee cap, and had to be helicoptered out.

IIRC the beach at the end of the trail is clothing optional... just a heads up cuz you have a young daughter... and... well... just thought I would mention it.
