I was down in the city today for a meeting. Rosa Parks Boulevard and Michigan Ave., grabbed lunch at the White Castle.

No reason to be scared, it's practically a ghost town.

Such a waste.

During the day it's a ghost town, but the baddies come out at night... just like zombies.

It is a sad state of affairs. It does seem that we are going to have to protect ourselves more and more in the future. I don't live in a high crime area but I also don't rely on law enforcement, it takes too long simply due to living in the boonies.

I think you guys are way off base. The downtown is pretty active and safe. Its the residential nieghborhoods that are the problem - where middle class whites don't go. The City is not the problem, its a culture of consumerism, violence, fatalism, desparation, and entitlement that is the problem.

Obama is going to say, "Detroit needs Gun Control to bring the level of violence down, so that more of my suporters don't get killed."

I went to school in Flint, and a surprising number of students living off campus kept shotguns beside their beds.

After seeing Roger & Me, I thought Flint would be scary, but even the worst neighborhoods were tame compared to many areas of detroit. (This was 1999-2003).

Where in Flint? I graduated from Flint Central.

I'm in Windsor usually once a year or so (I'll be there tomorrow actually). The Detroit skyline from across the river is just beautiful - I love walking along the river and just admiring the buildings. Looking at it it's hard to believe there's so much rot in the city.

I was in Detroit for the first time ever during the baseball playoff run in the fall. I had an absolute blast and thought the people were amazing.

Have never been to a town with friendlier people.

Maybe it was the playoffs, who knows.

Many of the people enjoying Detroit night life (ballgames, hockey, concerts, dining, gambling, and other entertainment) drive in from the surrounding cities and suburbs. This is a different breed of patron and different subject than the worn/torn urban/social fabric found within actual city limits.

The good things in Detroit such as places to live, work, learn, shop, and experience (events etc..) have been described as islands or oasis destinations. They exist as stand alone items, with a certain amount of disconnect from their surroundings.

Driving along Riverside Dr. in Windsor last night with a friend, he said "we have a saying around here: the best view from Windsor is across the river to Detroit. The best view from Detroit is from Windsor, across the river to Detroit".

Detroit isn't getting any better. Any reports of "young urbanites moving in the city" is simply wishful thinking. I drive through the city almost every day and it's dead...
