shipping to Australia ? Help please

I have a Carrera intake manifold for sale in the classifieds and I received a PM from a gent in Australia asking for a shipping quote. He provided a four digit postal code. I just did a online quote for FED EX and UPS and for a " guestimated " package size of 20 " x 30 " x 14 " and 50 pounds came up with $700.00 plus !!!!! Is it possible it is that much ? I think my guestimate is close will have to actually measure/weigh to be totally accurate. Man if that's accurate the shipping is more than I'm asking for the part Any tips or suggestions ? If it matters the postal code he gave me is 6060.

USPS. But an intake is big, it won't be cheap. I just shipped one in the U.S. and the box was 31x18x10 with the intake broken down and well-buffered.

USPS X2. I've shipped a couple of parts to Australia, but they were smaller and lighter (steering wheel and a center console). The rates were very reasonable and we need to support our brothers in the Southern Hemisphere. Shipping for your intake will be less, but still very expensive. Then again, Porsche parts are very expensive down under.

Looks like my size guesstimate was close what was your shipping weight ? When you say it was " broken down " does that mean you separated the two halves of the manifold at the throttle body ? I was thinking of shipping as one piece but breaking it down may make sense.

A box that size is to large to mail to Australia via USPS. When you get above their size limits, it goes FEDEX. I think the maximum size for Priority mail to Australia is length+girth=79 inches.

You might try DHL, or shipping it in more than one box, or perhaps getting quotes from a freight forwarder.

I have no problem supporting our brothers " down under " but I was floored by the shipping estimator quote ! Hey the buyer will be paying so no skin off my nose but I want to make it as reasonable as possible. I'm not looking to profit on the freight I'll charge the buyer whatever the cost is and not a penny more.

What issues are involved with shipping something internationally that smells like gasoline ? It's an intake manifold no way of getting around it she smells like gas. Not fresh gas but never the less gas. I'm sure it will be detected by something/someone.

Have buyer arrange shipping.

They set it up, pay for it, send you the shipping label.

You box and drop off.

I prefer that route as buyer can opt for whatever level of service and insurance they want leaving nothing to dispute should something go amiss.

What's nice is you get special rates shipping via USPS who then gives it to FedEx.

For Australia, Total Length and Girth combined may not exceed 108 inches (274.32 cm).

I just plugged in my box: 31lbs with 31x18x10 and the online price was $249.04.

Not too bad for what it is and Australians expect these high shipping rates, so it's not a surprise.

Spray brake cleaner down the fuel lines, drain. Let sit for a day+. Repeat. Cap each line with plastic bag and rubber band. Put whole unit in 2 large trash bags, opposed openings, tape to seal.

Make sure you get email updates and the buyer gets email updates on the shipping. In the last 3 weeks, regular USPS lost a package sent to India and USPS/FedEx Global Express Guaranteed delayed a package 8 days to India. At least they refunded the shipping price, and fast.

If you can keep it under 79", it's a lot cheaper. That same weight in a box small enough to go Priority would be about $170. Either way, it's a better deal than dealing directly with FEDEX or UPS.

You (or the buyer) find someone traveling down there. Been there 3 times. Once, I took the following Harley parts in my luggage for a friend:

2 pistons
2 cylinders
2 heads
2 Carbs
2 ignition systems

Wife carried 1/2, declared at customs and had no worries......

Yes, I split at the large connector to the right of the throttle body. MAF didn't go with it but every else did, pulled the elbow off and packed in the box. As you'll measure, the entire unit is about 27 inches long but it's also about 14 inches high. I broke it down so that with good cushioning down below, the isolator mounts removed, it just fit in my 10" high heavy duty box with cushioning on top. If you go to the trouble of removing the injector harness and fuel line, it would probably fit nicely in a Home Depot 18x18x18 heavy duty box.

Breaking it down is definitely the way to go. One other thing, there are companies in any decent sized town that sell boxes. You can find a lot of different sizes available, more choices than if you buy them at U-haul and places like that. Custom sized boxes can be made as well and I've done that many times when trying to get something shipped that was a challenge to fit into the postal size guidelines for a particular country.

On boxes, UHaul Shorty Wardrobe were made specifically to ship 911 gas tanks. Put a cushion on the bottom, lower gas tank in, put a cushion on the top and seal.

2 Space Saver Wardrobe boxes sleeved are perfect for shipping impact bumper seats.

Home Depot has great boxes, some heavy duty, for next to nothing.

Bicycle boxes are also an excellent resource for a ton of parts and are free.

What about a freight company? It only costs $@ 1K to ship a 500lbs engine from there to the states!

This may be your best option.

I bought a "Schrick" Manifold for my VR6 from the States. It was shipped through a shipping company. It's a bit smaller than your Carrera Manifold.
This is what I bought. From memory it cost about $250 to ship but that was in 2007.
