what does a Colt Python go for these days?

Dunno, there is just something special about the Colt revolvers, especially the earlier V spring guns. The first Colt .357 was called just that "Colt .357". It was a precursor to the Colt Trooper which later evolved into the Python. One of the nice things about a .357 chambered piece is that you can shoot .38 special ammo in it also. A Python/Trooper/.357 with a 6" bbl has enough "heft" to keep the recoil reasonable. Try it, you'll like it! I don't own a Python, but some of it's earlier kin have found their way to live at my house. There are 5 .357s in the picture below ranging from a 2 1/2" to 6" barrel lengths.

I paid $750 for a 92% Python 6" in blue (with its original box) a few months ago. I've seen them at up to $1500 (NIB). The Python was made from 1955-1999 and 2001-2003 (Python Elite).

Personally, I prefer the S&W revolver for its trigger feel.

As a reward for making both honor roll and the high school baseball team Zack is getting the top of his wish list...the S&W 686+ for his birthday. Of course it has to be in my name but once he turns 21 it will be 'officially' his. We have shot several examples and they are insanely accurate - especially in single action mode. Easy and simple to operate and make a nice boom when loaded for such or cheap to shoot in .38sp.

You guys seen that S&W MP eight shot revolver? I think its an "M8" or something. The only thing I wanted to say about it is that I believe it is basically an 8 shot M27 with scandium alloy used in the frame. I hefted one at a shop and thought it was freakin' awesome, especially for a revolver guy. It has a rail for a light too which negates a lot of negatives regarding revolvers not being "tactical". Its hard to argue with eight shots of .357 mag.

SW MP is a K frame, SW mdl 27 is an N frame, which came with a Checkered top strape and adjustable sights...in their new incarnation they are 7 shots...ehhh...

I am not BSing you..so take this seriously...if you buy a 686 buy an earlier one that is NIB...SN prefix AAA through BDZ...which is a late 1988 revolver. Before they did their internal mods...they are rather plentiful in this condition so it will not be that hard to find.

4, 6 or 8 3/8....if you can find one buy it with the adjustable FRONT sights...6 or 8 3/8 the adjustable front sights are a bit tougher to corral.

Only 5 357's..geez I have that many 5 screw pre and post war pre mdl 27's.

U forgot to mention the pre war New Service framed Shooting Master in 357....

yeah jtkkz, that's similar to what I'm talking about.

Currently they are making a scandium framed eight shot .357 as part of the MP line (Ithink). You can also get one from the Performance Center. Really intersting gun.

I guess it all depends on what you want to do with it. If you're going to leave it in a box or safe, or just shoot .38's the Smiths and Colts will do the job. If you intend to feed it a diet of magnums, you should consider a Ruger.

Cliff look at it this way; for less than a Python you can get the MP R8. It is close to a no compromise revolver. More power than a .45 ACP 1911, same number of shots. Plus they use full-moon clips so reloads are pretty darn fast.
