OUCH! .... Fashion Magazine Editor Walks Into Plane Propeller

Fashion Magazine Editor Walks Into Plane Propeller
Dec 05, 2011 3:48 PM EST

The editor of a Dallas-area online fashion magazine has been severely hurt after walking into the propeller of a small airplane following a flight to view Christmas lights.

A spokeswoman at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas says 23-year-old Lauren Scruggs of Plano was in serious condition Monday. She's editor of LoLo Magazine.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the accident happened Saturday night at a private airport in McKinney.

Family spokeswoman Janee Harrell says Scruggs had just gotten off the private plane after a trip to see holiday lights. Harrell told The Associated Press that Scruggs lost her left hand in the accident, plus suffered head, brain and shoulder injuries.

Saw that earlier.

Send some good vibes.

Oh my. Where was the operator of the plane? It sucks to hear of this happening. We lost about 1 person per cruise on the carriers due to propellers.

I can't really believe someone does this and lives. Had a guy in Nam...walked into the tail rotor. He was just a red mist from the waist up. Chilling

Still no reason to leave it running. Anybody know if it was a twin or a single engine?

Oh man..... as a pilot and A/P I will have nightmares about this. Our stupid dog chases anything with an engine. If we did not have an invisible underground dog fence, I would surely be one less stupid dog and would owe one of my airplane buddies who occasionally land at my strip an expensive tear down/overhaul to assess damage from a prop strike.

+1 on being surprised she is still alive. What an awful thing to happen to someones little girl.

I think (spelling) Jacques Coustoe, anyway the famous SCUBA diver's son was decapitated from a helo accident about 20 years ago. Dangerous stuff. Easy to get killed.
Memories of Vietnam come to mind. Fasion designers is one thing but what I saw was
really hard to figure out "why?."

I just don't understand how you can walk into a propeller. That's just one of those things that seems like it would make enough of a disturbance in its immediate vicinity that you'd notice. I wonder if she was sober.

Had a Lab walk into the prop of a 600 Agcat. I was at the back of the plane talking to a customer when I heard a scream amd white hair and a red mist came boiling back on us. Scared the hell out of us. Ran around front, chased the dog down and carried him to vet. Had him back the same day. Vet said prop grazed his spine. Prop accidents happen fairly frequently.

so?

what is news?

she was 23? Blonde? Fashion Editor of a magazine, at 23? uh-huh, it's not Cosmo high profile "magazine" I'm sure.

Simple dirty news, "Fat chick gets stuck on a 747 toilet seat" and now "Blonde walks into a propeller.

Sad yes, news no.

I genuinely salute anyone serving on deck of a carrier, or pilot landing and taking off, especially at night. Gotta be up at a 12 on a scale of 1-10 pucker factor.

Of course there is other news of survival too in the news, luckily, this guy had Pink Floyd and Beer

U.S. News - Alaska man stranded in snow 3 days survives on frozen beer

I'm sorry someone had to make a reference to a blonde about this incident.

No, really, little plane, in the dark, idling quietly after a noisy flight. It was just lack of attention and carelessness on the part of all.

But, there will be one less pilot in the sky tomorrow. He's done.

It can happen. It really doesnt make that much of a noise in certain areas or when the prop is feathered. I was helping a friend test the engine and fittings on an acro sport before covering the fuselage. The plane did not have it's wings attached yet so I had an unobstructed passage straight to the propeller. I was on the right side of the fuselage looking forward for fuel leaks. There was a steady wind but very little noise. I was concentrating on looking for fuel leaks around the engine and exhaust pipes which point down and are located near the nose of the palne. There was a piece of tin that was blocking my view. I took a step closer to get a better view then I began to take a second when my buddy throttled the engine up and startled me. Had I taken the second step and leaned forward I may have been hit by the prop. I am experienced around airplanes and I came close. Granted this girl was hit by a plane with wings but I can see how a person not familiar with planes not paying attention and the prop is feathered that it could happen.
