Garage find: 1964 356 coupe. What's it worth?

A buddy asked me to go with him to look at a '64 (i think) 356 today. Story is it was the father's of a guy my buddy works with. The father died several years ago and his mother has had it sitting in the garage ever since. There's no engine but the engine may be retrievable. It's been sitting for about 15 years.

There's quite a bit of rust around the windows and at the edge of some panels but I didn't find any major rust in the floor boards.

He wants to get rid of it but needs to determine the right price.

That's not bad at all. I have no idea what it's worth.

If it was mine I would clean the paint and leave the rust alone, install a motor and drive it pretty much as it is.
I bet that interior would come up pretty good with a partial strip and clean.

(new tires, rebuild brakes, change gearbox oil, etc etc)

I'm not sure of the value, (especially w/o seeing a lot more pictures), but I'd be interested in it for some price. I know where there's an engine for it here in SoCal.

I'm not sure from your post if you want it and just need to assign a value to it or if you're going to help them sell it(?) At any rate, PM sent.

The car came up when a couple guys were talking at my buddy's office which is not in Texas. From talking to my buddy, it sounds like the guy interested in the car is not a Porsche guy and doesn't understand what's involved so I hope and expect the car not to go to him. The owner's son who is probably in his 60's and not a car guy just wants to get rid of it.

I'm halfway temped to buy the car myself if the price is right. I'd have to put it in storage for a while until I could get rid of some garage toys (any body need some karts?) I doubt I talk myself into it though but I do want it to go to a good home so that's the direction I'll be working for now.

Looking online these seem to go for around $50K in good condition, so where does that put this car? $10K? $20K?

What's up with the KPH speedo? Is it a gray market car?

More pics:

An SC, yes. A Normal C non-sunroof Coupe will bring less than an SC.

I've just started a full restoration of a numbers maching '65 Normal Coupe. I don't know what something like this is worth to someone else, but I can tell you what it's costing me to restore mine.

One really nice thing about this silver 356 is that you can tell that most of the car is there. My car was already completley disassembled and sorted in coffee cans and tupperware containers when I got it. Im still discovering that I'm missing seemingly random parts. The chassis and all of the panels on my car were phosphate dipped, so there were no hidden rust issues on mine.

That rust is not an issue, just surface. Very nice condition. I would love to stumble across something like that.

Maybe it's a Canadian delivered car... When did Canada go metric?

Down here it was early 70s.

Mine is in similar shape but is 100% all there and 100% original. Insurance and I have an "agreed value" policy for $10k.

Figure $3k for a long block core motor, maybe you can find a running one for $4500. Then figure on 35k or so of body work, paint, interior stuff, etc. When all done and said you'll have a car worth about 40k... BUT I think the C/SC coupes make the best driver 356s... you could be driving it for $5-7k ... motor (running VW), electricals, some interior, brakes, tires, flushing rust and such from the fuel tank, etc.

I've seen S-90 engines go for 5-7 in running condition. A 912 engine is also an option. I would say 10-15 to buy it.

Restored sc's go for 30+. Sometimes way more.

I think Lube is closer than Les. Right off the bat I thought 8K but then I remembered he said no motor. "Retrievable" is a very key word here especially if it is the original SC motor. Then I would tend to drift in Les Paul's direction.

7 or 8k? That car is worth an easy 15K in the shape it's in. I would be inclined to pay more for that car if it's available. David send me a PM I would by that car in the blink of an eye and for honest money ( No Lowballing).
