My Daughter's Boy Friend Call me to Ask If he could Marry her!

Old fashioned guy, she's 26, he's 32. He works for one big accounting firm, she works for another in Manhattan. Hell of a nice guy, middle of the road conservative (you might even call him a moderate, like me). He makes a awful lot of money as a Partner in the firm, and she is up and coming in her firm. She moved to Manhattan with him about six weeks ago without a commitment, I advised against moving into his condo (yes a condo in mid-town Manhattan, not an apartment). I told him I was delighted. I can't believe my little girl is going to get married. SmileWavy

Congrats! I did the same thing with my wife's parents. Called, them, got them both on speaker phone and asked. That was harder than the actual proposal!

I asked my FIL first, too. He said "as long as my daughter is happy." Not exactly a heart-warming endorsement.

Oh my. Congratulations!

szyzygy 02-24-2012 03:44 PM

I just got married in October. I did the same thing, except her parents are local, so I invited them out to a nice dinner, brought the ring I intended on giving her and asked them in person. A little harder on different coasts though. I think that says a lot about a young man and wouldn't expect any less from someone that would want to marry one of my (future possibility) daughters.

Congrats, I sometimes wish when I asked my FIL he would have said no.

Absolutely! I think they want to hold it on St. Thomas, you'll have to pay your own freight and room however. Actually, that could turn out pretty cheap for me versus a local wedding with a couple of hundred guests.

Thanks guys.

Congratulations

I take it he is worthy of her, or you would have been less smiley about it.

I asked my wife's parents first, had the ring like a month before I asked her.

I still believe in that. Funny, I did that with both of my fathers-in-law (1st marriage didn't take). Funny thing, both of them went into a story why their marriages didn't last right after I asked. Odd.

Congrats...and holy crap, bought a condo in NYC, depending on size, they typically average over $1m.

Congrats, Hugh.
