My wife's cousin's Maxima.....

I hate to see anybody getting ripped off particularly a woman. I posted this here because this section seems to attract folks like bees to honey. Anyway here goes. My wife's cousin lives in Toronto, Canada and has a 2000 Nissan Maxima GLE. She has a ABS lite on and was quoted $1900 for the abs module which includes labor and parts. Now I see this as Porsche stratosphere pricing. Can anybody with knowledge of Nissan Maxima year 2000 enlighten me on the possible cost to fix this?How much would it cost to replace the ABS module?

My immediate thought was "get a second opinion". Can anybody enlighten me? Can. $ is virtually on par with US $.

Any issue with letting it go? Could you disable the ABS without affecting the car?

My trac control light is on in the Jag. Common problem on Jags and well documented as how to fix: 2 solder connections on the board. Hard to get to and a new one is 2500. Get to it, open it up carefully with a cast cutter and it's free to fix.

But, the indies want around 3 K to do it and won't touch a solder job. Just tellin' ya.

I just checked car-part.com, and my local import salvage yard is showing one in stock for $60.00. There are a bunch available for $40.00- $150.00. Find a indy to replace it for her, labor guide shows .5 hours so you are looking at $50.00 dollars in labor, + maybe some diag time.
My guide shows the module new at $837.00. Sounds like she is not getting a fair shake

The best fix for this problem will be getting it remanufactured. A1-Cardone rebuilds modules...or just google "abs module remanufactures" and you'll get a bunch to choose from. ECM/BCM/TCM usually only cost $300-$400 to rebuild.

Get a second opinion. A single faulty sensor will give you an ABS light as will certain conditions of worn brakes.

My mechanic for my Tahoe is an independent. He repairs all makes. He won't take anyone to the cleaners. If you want I can ask him what he thinks.

Fred's recommendation is exactly what I was thinking

It's a 12 year old car. Put in a good used part and move on with life. It'll be fine. Even if you have to do it several times in the coming years, you'd be ahead.

If it took 10 hours to install, that would be a different story. But under an hour? No risk with the cheap part.

Black tape over the light if the brakes work OK. Is a 12 year old Nissan worth $2k?

Add me to the goup that says throw a used one on there and keep rolling. Given how cheap used modules are and how easy they are to replace you'll stay way ahead even if you have to do this again in a year or two. If it's the module then it's not a significant safety issue. The car still has brakes it just doesn't have anti-lock brakes.

I did this on my wife's Lincoln LS 7-8 years ago. Right as the warranty went out the Traction Control module went south. Same as ABS module but with more channels. Anyway, new OEM was $2k. I picked up a used one for less than $100 and had it swapped out in half an hour. IIRC four screws and a couple of electircal connectors. My wife drove the car for another 60k miles with no issues from the used Traction Control module.
