The thing that stands out to me the most is not how fast the Mustang is... but that the Cayman R was only 1 second slower on a 3 minute lap. And the Cayman is only blessed with 330HP.

That is 114HP less than the mustang. Shame that 114HP extra in the Mustang can only garner 1 second of lap time. And the straights at VIR are long. I've driven it. Horsepower helps.

Shame on Porsche for not giving the Cayman a bigger motor. It would ruin their business model though, and profit margins.

No one has brought up the fact that the Panamera Turbo S was $194,665 as-tested. It sure as he11 better be fast!!

And Schumi, same goes for the Cayman R. At $85,100 it was exactly $37,000 more than the fancy Mustang Boss LS, even though it lapped a second slower. "Yeah, but is has less power" really isn't a compelling arguement for going slower and costing a whole (nice) car more.

Cayman R curb weight: 2855lbs (manual trans)
Mustang Boss curb weight: 3657lbs

You think that has anything to do with it?

The same reason a 300hp Ariel Atom 3 at 1,350lbs ran a 2.57.6. The Boss is carrying more weight and cargo room. It also has AC and cupholders. You would be surprised how much drag a cupholder has

And the number of doors is directly related to performance. That is why the General Lee has never been defeated...

So the argument here shouldn't be why the mustang of the Cayman R is better, but should be- why the hell can't either Porsche or Ford come up with a car that has the power of one and the handling & tech of the other?

In the real world there are lots and lots of reasons. Unfortunate ones, for the consumer and manufacturers both.

As someone who does this for a living, it is something I visit on a daily basis.

Rumor has it that Ford has a Mustang in the pipeline that even you might like...IRS included. I'm sure they know that they risk alienating some of their traditional customer base. Time will tell if they are planning a bust or something good.

I have been driving 911,s off and on since 1972 and my present daily driver is a 95 993C2.I periodically move between the Porshes and domestic cars. Just bought a 2012 Boss 302 yesterday so I,m leaving again for a while anyway.

Don't be fooled into thinking any of those test cars bear any resemblance to similar versions off of a dealer lot. They are "prepped" to the nth degree by each manufacturer, but they won't tell you that.

The Nissan GT-R is a beast. Maybe not the greatest looking car, but definitely one of the best sounding. I want one.
