IMS replacement after failuer
 

Hello,

Has anyone been able to replace a bearing after a failure , given metal particles in the oil. Wondering if possible to flush out the particles. This is provided the ims bearing shaft has not been dameged e.g snap ring is groove is still present.

I believe that if the bearing fails, not only does it spread metal debris throughout the engine but a bunch of other damage occurs as a result of the failure.

Did the engine come to a stop?

Thank you for the response. No, engine is fine timing on and ims replaced 20,000 miles and counting . I Checked timing before replacing and spot on only indication was ims center bolt snapped and leaked oil stopped and replaced right away and non issue since. Only concern is longevity and if others have had similar success?

I've read of several instances similar to this, the owners changed the oil and filter multiple times at short intervals to help flush the system. At this point what do you have to lose?

How did u manage to detect the ims failure so soon without doing major damage? You must have shut down the motor when u saw/heard what?

Only time will tell and with 20K now since replacement it seems you dodged a bullet. Have you done an oil analysis?

I did one on a 2000 Boxster S that had lots of metal in it. It looked like fools gold in the oil and countershaft. The customer wanted us to replace the bearing anyway. We did. Its still on the road. :eek:

You say the IMS center bolt snapped, was it an original, factory IMS? Was it replaced with the LN engineering IMS bearing?

yes, the original bolt singal row bearing. However, metal not as bad as indicated. Where was that metal wiped from and how long ago was the ims replaced? Has the car covered many miles?

Can the IMS bearing be replaced without cracking the case?

We did the bearing replacement about two years ago and probably 8-10 thousand miles. The metal was wiped from the inside of the counter shaft. I can't believe the car is still running myself.
I am not recommending that anyone replace their IMS bearing with this much metal inside the engine. This guy is just really lucky...so far.

Thank you for the reply, was there any metail particles in the oil itself? Did you take the oil pan down to remove the larger chunks if there were any? lastly, did this car fail with the center bolt breaking or what type of ims failure did the car have?

Yes. There was metal in the oil. We did pull the pan and cleaned as best as possible. The center bolt was fine. Slight oil leak from sealing area. (pretty normal)
It came to us with a noise complaint. The bearing was loose and wobbly.

Wow, I lost the center bolt cracked right off and leaked out all the oil. The car ran perfect no noise ect.. Only indication was a large oil leak similar to a rear main seal failure. However, no timing was lost? This is the forth car I have heard of with similar situation?
