I just found out I may be going to jail!!

or at least be held for "contempt".
The back story.
A little while back a fellow motorist claimed I had backed into him in a parking lot. We exchanged insurance info at the scene and as expected he made a claim with insurance. As part of this claim I received what was explained to me as a "Discovery " questionnaire. This questionnaire had a couple questions that I refused to answer. It now seems that I have to appear in front of a Judge to either answer the questions, provide an acceptable reason why I shouldn't answer or be found in contempt.
I've made considerable effort over the years to keep personal info "off the radar" and feel that providing this information to a third party (the guy suing me not necessarily the court) would be contrary to those efforts. I find it very ironic that for all the shenanigans that I should/could be in jail for I'm getting called to the bench for refusing to answer a couple personal questions.
This could get interesting.

sound to me like you don't have an expensive enough lawyer.

...judges are lawyers too, and they usually like to see their profession thrive.

I have to wonder why they would care about information. If your insurance company is paying what would it matter.

I have been to several medical doctors in recent years and they all want my SSN. I always leave it blank. One doctors office insisted I give them a number. I told them it was 555 55 5555 and she input it and that made her happy.

It was explained to me that the questionnaire is a standard form presented to all parties involved.

Tell them to contact your agent (who can stonewall them). IMO, if this third party is using "representation" to contact you, you should use "representation" to respond.

My insurance company is handling the claim for me. They have assigned an attorney to the case. So far I'm very happy with the attorney assigned to the case. This questionnaire was presented to me from my attorney and I had been advised in advance what to expect if I refused to answer the questions. So far everything is going just as I was told it would.

I'm no lawyer, but it sounds like you are getting ready to be sued.

It's a game of deep pockets. My policy limits are low. If they feel that I have the means of paying more than my policy limit then they are more likely to not accept a settlement from my insurance company and go after personal assets.

So, what does the attorney think the end result will be?

what would be better would be having someone on your side. ...not just FOR your insurance company.

She has only stated that it is my insurance company's goal to settle within my policy limits. She has not made any assumptions or predictions towards that end.

Then I'd ride with Island...if you plan on sticking to your guns, it may be best to hire your own attorney.

What kind of speed was involved and what were the damages $$ estimates, it all seems silly to me with what little you have shared, sounds like the other party is a real dbag.
