Losing job... My turn

Well my company just announced a major downsizing and we will be furloughing by seniority order starting next month. I have been there over 6 years and this will affect pilots who have been with the company for over 8 years. My number should be up by August I'm told. I have been searching everyday for the last couple of weeks and have a few leads here and there but it's an employers market out there for sure. There are so many pilots on furlough right now that they are picking and choosing candidates with a fine tooth comb, all for lower pay and basically starting over. I seriously didn't think there was a worse industry to be in besides Automotive, but Aviation is proving to be much worse.

i still have connections at Brickyard/Mercury/Chautauqua if you're interested. PM if you want.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I remember when pilots were valued.

slodave 02-29-2012 07:38 PM

Sorry to hear the news, Marc!

MBAtarga 02-29-2012 07:41 PM

That is a bummer!

Agreed. Anyone gainfully employed now is truly blessed.

Sorry to hear this...

Just remember- life is not about what happens to you- it is what you make of it. Treat it like a new opportunity!

rusnak 02-29-2012 08:05 PM

Keep going, something will turn up!

I was seriously considering a career in aviation back in the day. While I sometimes get wistful about it, you guys have ridden a tough road. Best of luck to you. Pilots aren't bus drivers but sometimes it seems like they get treated as such.

slodave 02-29-2012 08:12 PM

I'd steal the jet on the last day. Take off and fly into the sunset!

Joeaksa 02-29-2012 08:56 PM

Truthfully am feeling that you will be fine. Major hiring in the industry is upon is, and when the airlines hire, it sucks people out of the other areas in aviation.

Hold on, get your resume up to date and keep your eyes open.

Stink.

A friend is also losing his job, but is pretty mobile, so is going to work for ryanair who are hiring.

5String43 02-29-2012 09:41 PM

Bummer. Hope this is a very temporary situation for you. But it's everyone's worst nightmare. The paper where I work is downsizing. Again. Aren't they all? Just hoping I can hang on for awhile longer. They still need copy editors. Don't they?

crustychief 02-29-2012 09:57 PM

I feel for you, I am sure you will get a great gig soon though.

rusnak 02-29-2012 11:21 PM

Don't get down brother. Follow through, and go after what you want.

A930Rocket 02-29-2012 11:48 PM

Hold on, as it will get better.

If it's any consolation, the building industry sucks even more, losing my job after 18 years. :(

Oh Haha 03-01-2012 04:14 AM

Sorry to hear this.

I wish you the best in finding a new gig.

shadowjack1 03-01-2012 04:46 AM

That really sucks. You flying fixed or flop wing?
