Need Recommendation for nice Hotel/Resort in Palm Springs or Desert

The wife and I are needing a 3-4 day break from life (work/kids/stuff) and are looking for a nice property within driving distance from North County San Diego. We just want to sleep in, hang out by the pool, eat nice meals and drink good wine, just a couple days of flat out relaxing.

Timeframe is mid March arriving on a Friday. So what can you folks recommend?

The JW Marriott is pretty nice. I can vouch for the food and golf, never stayed there since my parents have a place across the street.

Have you considered Temecula?

I say that because you mentioned wine and I hear they do that well.

I always wanted to stay at one of the cool mid century modern places like the Orbit Inn, Hideaway, or Desert Star. One of these days.

I did that... don't remember the name of the place but it was where Marylin Monroe stayed when she was in town. Several nice bungalow type apartments around a very fancy pool with nice landscaping.

Very cool but a little creepy at night.

Don't forget the La Quinta Resorts just south of the 10 there, not to be mistaken for the cheap motel chain.

We did a few days at the Orbit Inn during Modernism week last year. It was a blast. Small and lacking the amenities of a true "resort" but the rooms were nicely done, pool was great, free happy hour, cool owners, a great place that we'll definately visit again. Easy access to the Museum, downtown, hiking, etc.

Agree on La Quinta Resort. Great golf and spa and very kid friendly.

+1 on the Marriott Desert Springs. My parents have a time share there and we've been going down to it for years. Can't speak to the hotel rooms - we've always stayed in the villas, which were quite nice.

Thanks for the input folks. Looks like La Quinta Resort is the winner this time. We are a big fan of the JW properties but our one visit to the Desert Springs resort was a bit disappointing.

Take a few hours & go to Indian Canyons for a hike. Truly incredible.

I thought the Colony Palms in downtown Palm Springs was a pretty good value. Beautiful property one block off of main street. Nice pool, though populated by more than a few "movers and shakers" with b-berry earpieces. Low key though...

Dang, you guys are making me want to head out to the desert. My ex-GF lives on the golf course @ PGA West in La Quinta. The house is very similar to the one in "Casino" where you walk out the back sliding glass door and you're on the green.

I don't really golf anymore, otherwise I'd be out there all the time. It's gorgeous.

i head over to palm springs on a lot of my "weekends" (i dont have regular weekends off).

mid century modernism week just finished up there. last weekend i stayed at Caliente Tropics. definitely not a resort, but it's certainly mid century. complete with cabanas, tiki motif, etc. nice pool and spa. it was mega cheap, too.

I'd highly recommend getting a poolside casita in the 800 or 900 series rooms.

Somewhere in rooms 936-946, or 866-881, or similar.

Just ask for " poolside casita in the 800 or 900s" they'll know what you are talking about.
