Is video surveillance .....

a practical reasonably priced set up for your home such that when u are away on holiday u can get an instant pic of what is going on in your home on your mobile phone? We have a modest home but the idea of somebody breaking in does not give me a good feeling when we are away. Is this just for "rich" people or is it becoming more comoon for average joes like myself. Any ideas of $$ installation and monthly payment?

My business has been doing this sort of thing for years. You can put a basic alarm system in that will alert you via cell phone if activated then you can log on using your smartphone to check the cameras. You should be able to get away with something with decent quality for around $1500.

I'm using this as an example. I know nothing about it...

Amazon.com: Swann SWDVK-825508 8-Channel Digital Video Recorder with Smartphone Viewing and 8 x PRO-550 Cameras: Electronics

$500 for the system, then you install yourself or hire someone to do it. No monthlies.

Wireless IP cams are suuper cheap nowadays.

I have a few of these:

D-Link Products - DCS-932L - mydlink-enabled Wireless N Day/Night Home Network Camera

$99 each, $79 without the night vision.

You can set it up in your home and have it sync to your wireless. There's night vision and a motion detector; you can have the camera send you an email with a picture every time the motion detector is set off.

There's also an phone app where you can log on and watch live video of each cam from your phone, or you can log on from a computer if you like.

It's fun, but it's definitely only an add-on to an actual security system.

I bought a system off of Zoot for about $100 and in the middle of hooking it up right now. It comes without a hard drive but I have 10-20 of them lying around that will end up being stuck inside so thats no biggie.

Four night and motion sensor camera's, hooks to the internet and I used a spare 17" flat screen monitor on it and am set.

I live in a nice area but there are times the local kids get frisky and just want to make sure that if something happens that I know who did it...

Dirt cheap if you go DIY ... a few webcams, a small computer, some linux, some scripting. detect motion, record video, grab still frame, send you an email w/ attachment..

I have an 8 camera Swann system. It was dirt cheap. The quality is surprisingly good given the price (<$500). Installation can be a challenge though. I was able to mount the cameras on the outside under the roof line and chase the cables where I wanted them. I had to order some long cables for some of the cameras. The software is very easy once you figure out the tricks to it. You can access it from a web browser and an iPhone/iPod/Android phone and even blackberry. This last part is something I don't have working yet since it requires me to update the software.

It has been really nice having it. It has given me some piece of mind also.

From what I can tell, there are several comparable competing products.
