So will they be flying the flag at half mast for him as they did for Whitney (drug addict) Houston?? No? Really? I thought so...
Will they broadcast it on the news every night for a frickin week? No....really? Will they televise his funeral... No... really? |

Well it's very sad that any man dies that early.
Suppose I'll be you-tubing tonight to make sense of why, but as others have said he was a formative presence during our youth, so obviously his death is significant to many. Totally unrelated to Whitney apart from the fact they both are dead, so some of those comments above are puerile, imo.

An ordinary lad from the North west of England who went on to become a global superstar.
They outsold The Stones and The Beatles combined in one year. RIP Davey

I hate it when a musician passes. We also lost Maurice Andre' last week. You know the Monkees were big when Jimi Hendrix opened for THEM, and David Bowie had to change HIS last name. One more fun fact: They sold more records in 1967 than the Beatles and Rolling Stones COMBINED. (never underestimate the buying power of pre-teen girls).

I went to the reunion tour, must have been ten years ago.
He really looked good, built up some nice biceps and was showing them off. The performance was top notch too. They gave us the music video, right?

Interesting bit of trivia...Davy Jones appeared on Ed Sullivan show in a scene from the play "Oliver Twist" as the Artful Dodger the same night the Beatles appeared. The story goes Jones seeing the female audience reaction to the Beatles ed was a big factor in creating the Monkees.

Another interesting fact. Their TV show ushured in the first ever music videos, waaaaaaaay before MTV in 1981. Also the show had 'hired major talent' for the original music scoring/lyrics - One familiar name on the payroll: Neil Diamond!!

Surely the Monkees were just Hollywood hype?
None of them could play a musical instrument when they got together although they subsequently did. They were entertaining but left no lasting musical legacy, unlike the Stones or Beatles who had to actually work to create their following. Davy Jones had talent, no question, but if he hadn't answered an advert from a Hollywood agent we would probably never have heard of him-the rest of them...?
