I'd drive it daily.

Way cool.

I've owned a 1974 wagon for well over 20 years, they are solid tanks, but suffer from lack of parts and knowledge in the VW world. That looks like a 73, should have 1.7 d jetronic, 3 speed auto or 4 speed manual. Disk brakes up front, and a huge trunk make it a real highway traveler. Does it have A/C or the gas heater?

Great engine ;)

notfarnow 03-07-2012 03:28 PM

thoughts? No one ever accused them of being pretty

redstrosekNic 03-07-2012 03:31 PM

Awesome car. There is something cool about picking up a bunch of parts for your Porsche at a swap meet or something in an old VW...

billybek 03-07-2012 03:40 PM

I like these better!

I would definitely drive that 412!
I had an old type 3 wagon and I remember the front ends being pretty weak on them. Not sure if they went to a MacPherson strut front end on the 412 but it must be better than the type 3.

My dad bought one new. He loved the gas heater. I only drove it a few times because it was too fast. :) I had a 1960 bug as my car.

If I remember correctly, it uses the same engine that the 914. I loved my 914.

They handled great for their day, for a station wagon.

Enjoy the ride.

I think most people would say the 914 used the 411/412 engine. I hated them when they first came out because they were so un-Volkswagen-like (big, spacious, comfortable). But they've grown on me. I'd have one.

i had one that had a 914 2.0 w/webers and 4 speed. 2.0 alloys too. pretty cool cars. people didn't appreciate them enough.

HHI944 03-07-2012 05:06 PM

That's awesome. Just gotta put 30 inch spinners on it!

Close but not the same.

Thanks! Any thoughts on price for a stored restoration candidate?

That would be the plan. Sell my E320 wagon and put the $ into this.

TimT 03-07-2012 06:28 PM

I think they made a sedan version on that platform....They were scarce back then, who know how many are barn finds now

They do look good with 2.0 alloys & they bolt right on..

Tobra 03-08-2012 08:18 AM

I would buy that in a second. Keep in mind that some parts are very difficult to come by.

onewhippedpuppy 03-08-2012 08:58 AM

That's pretty cool. Definite lineage to the Dasher my parents had in the '80s. I still remember how that thing would absolutely cook you in the winter.
