Wagner power painters, any good?

I need to do some painting on a property with a mix of clapboard siding and some rough surfaces. Using brush/rollers would be pretty cumbersome. Are those Wagner power painters any good? Any tips on use?

I've never used one but have not heard anything good about them.

Why not just rent a real sprayer when you are fully prepped and ready to use it?

Only guy I know that uses them, is when painting beam, that really doesn't need to look good up close. He figures the cost of a power painter into a big job, uses it on that job, and pitches it. Says they are too big of a PITA to clean.....

You might consider a power roller instead. They used to make a "cheap" version which had a switch with just 2 settings for the pump, slow and slower. It is used to fill the roller head with paint. Roll, press button, roll, press button.

This is not the expensive floor unit which holds a whole can of paint. And yes, the unit is a little bit of a pain to clean, it can be done. I painted my entire apartment building (4 story walkup) inside and out with a roller unit.

edit: the unit I'm talking about is battery powered with 4 "D" batts

The one I used was this: Wagner 949 Pow-R-MAX

it's ok if you're doing a fence or something like that. it still blows a ton of extra paint all over, plus it's a pain to clean. i used it when i painted the walls and ceiling in my club flat black...worked fine for that, but that was hardly a precision job.

Both the Wagner and power rollers are a complete joke.

I used to do some commercial painting, and I will place another vote for "Go rent a real sprayer"

Any Parker Paint store (local to the Seattle area) has rental units that will run circles around a cheap "happy homeowner" piece-o-crap. If you want to own a sprayer, Parker Paint sells off their rental units at least every year. I bought one when I owned some apartment buildings, and it went through many many gallons of paint over several years completely trouble-free. I left it at the apartments when I sold the buildings. Sometimes wish I still had it. Wouldn't hesitate to buy another ex-rental.

The only good thing about a Wagner Power Painter: It helps you brush up on creative use of four-letter words.

That's a new definition of the right way to do things.

I have seen more misuse of paint spraying equipment than any other single tool I know that exists.

This statement comes from a former union trained painter.
