Drive in movies and cars
Many of us will date ourselves here. lol What was the first and last drive in movie you went to? The car you were in? Who were you with?
Mine: The first I recall was at age 4 or 5 in the late '50's with my parents in a Copper with white trim 1957 Chevy coupe. The movie was "Thunder Road" with Robert Mitchum. Last one was in the mid 70's in my 1966 Mustang GT350H. "The Exorcist". Alone....my gf dumped me earlier in the evening. I miss that car.

First one 1957 Ford Fairlane. Driven by my future uncle so he take out my aunt. (feeling was, if I was in the car there would be no hanky-panky. Don't remember the movie, but do remember a huge game of 'spotlight tag' before the show.
Last, 1966 dodge van Midnight Blue Earl Schieb enamel, with orange shag carpet, requisite porthole windows, and Pioneer super-tuner. Guests were my best friend, and two of the neighborhood girls who were 'good sports'. Movies were, "The Groove Tube", something while we were fooling around, and "Flesh Gordon".

I have no idea what movies I saw at the drive in, I just don't remember. The last one was probably in 1975 or so. I went with a date in my 914. A 914 is a real "birth control" vehicle. It my well have be a re-screening of 2001 a Space Odyssey. One thing for sure the crappy little speaker in the window is a LONG way from the THX sound system at the local theaters.

My first job out of high school was working at a drive-in late 70's..........$2.89 an hour if I remember right.
It was fun as working the front entrance ticket booth, you could get all your friends in for free, and as security, we'd walk around and bust people for booze and pot and take it all from them, only to be consumed by the employee staff later that night. Picking up used condoms thrown out of car windows from the back rows of the drive-in early Saturday Morning before the swap meet started I left to the others on the clean up crew....... good times. Back to your Question, I remember Mom/Dad taking us to see American Graffiti early on, and Jaws was one of the last.......seeing a 135 foot wide big screen shark eat everything in sight, no wonder Mom wouldn't let me become a certified scubadiver that year.. Kids of today seem to be happy watching a movie on their 3" screen Iphone, I simply can't understand that concept.

I honestly do not remember the first drive in movie I saw, but I am nearly sure that we were in dads 1970 ss 396 Chevelle.
Our local drive in re-opened up here about 10 years ago, and we try to go once a year . Makes for a nice summer evening with the little one.

Would have been my 1st gen RX-7. Hatchbacks are great for drive ins. Park backwards and "lounge" ![]()

Can't remember the first time or what movie but I do remember heading to the drive-in in high school quite often.
My friends would climb into the cavernous trunk of my '64 Impala to aid in saving a few bucks. The drive-in was party central. Don't remember ever watching the movie.

Don't remember the first one or name of the last. I do remember my family going to the drive in around 1948 or 1949 in a mid to late '40's Oldsmobile, which was our car at the time. I remember seeing Disney's Living Desert and Bear Country. I also remember we saw Days of Wine & Roses. Boy that was boring for little kids. My sisters & I couldn't imagine what that was all about. The last I saw was sometime in the late '70s. During HS my GF & I would go in my '55 Ford. I always took a soft ice chest with ice & a fairly complete selection of booze & mixers & sometimes even stem glasses. We'd smoke cigarettes, get decently lit & spend the rest of the time steaming up the windows. I don't remember any of the movies.

I was 15.
We lived in the coastal mountains near Newbury Park, California. The roads to the our place were all private, dirt roads. We were about two miles off the asphalt. I learned to drive our '58 El Camino manure truck when I was 12/13. Three on the tree, Ba Bee. My parents let me put my bike in the back of the Camino and drive to the end of the dirt road, park and ride to friends houses, school, etc. I decided one night to take my girlfriend, Ms. Aquino, to the drive-in theater in Newbury Park, right near Stage Coach Liquors and the elementary school, just off 101. I told my parents I was going to Steve's house, be back around 10 o'clock. So I drove to Westlake (which was a new development at the time) on 101, picked the divine Ms. A up, drove back to NP and took in the movie. I have no recollection of the movie. Drive-ins were great. Edit: The first drive-in movie I went to was Breakfast at Tiffany's with the family in 1961. Great stuff...pulled the truck in backwards: blankets, snacks and fun.

I can't even remember the last one I saw and it was just this past summer
![]() The first one I would have been a toddler. We have locally one of the few drive-ins left in Canada, I don't imagine they will survive the formats going digital this year.

I'm a late bloomer -- started going around 2005. With my wife, in my old Subaru. I think the movie was King Kong (the Jack Black remake).
Last time I went was last fall just before the Warwick Drive in closed for the winter season. I cannot remember what movie I saw that time. But we were in Mrs. Z-man's VW Eos. Watching a drive-in movie in a convertabe is fun! I've also gone in my Ford Sport Trac, and sat in the pickup bed - also fun! That said, Mrs. Z and I prefer the drive-in movie vs. a regular theature. During the spring-summer-fall season, 99% of the movies we see are at the drive-in. The Warwick Drive-In is about 45 minutes from our home, and we typically go up early, visit some farms for fresh produce, and will grab a sandwhich at the grocery store and have a picnic before the movie begins. A couple of years ago, I convinced the local PCA reigon (NNJR) to do a social event at Warwick Drive-in. About 15-20 Porsches showed - it was a fun evening. There's just something magical about a Drive-in. I have a 'bucket-list' goal to visit as many drive-ins across the USA that are still open. So far, I've been to two: Warwick Drive-In and the Saco Drive-In in Saco, Maine, which is the 2nd oldest Drive-In stil in operation. -Z-man.

First time was when I was about five, so probably 1956... me, younger sister, little baby brother, and the 'rents... saw "Lady and the Tramp" and I'm pretty sure we were in an early 50's Packard. I've got a pic of it somewhere... four-door, ugly pale pastel green.
I think the last time was with the wife in the late '70's, so it was probably in my '74 Manta, and I'm pretty sure it was a triple feature, but I only remember two of 'em: "The Bees" and "Don't Look in the Basement."

About three months ago. Went to the still-open Starlight Drive-In here in the ATL with some great food and wine and watched "Paranormal Activity 3" or whatever it was called.
Took the business car--a Honda Element that has back seats that basically collapse into a full-on bed in back. Back into the space, open the rear lid, twist the cork, and viola! Just like it should be..... While I grew up surrounded by drive-ins in Florida--my wife had never visited one prior to this past summer when we went to Starlight for the first time after living here for 15 years! Awesome throwback fun. Glad they've been able to keep this place open and viable. Starlight Six Drive-In ![]() ![]()
