I'd loan em a corolla, but like hell would I loan them anything else....
I'd be more worried about the clutch though..... |

I love letting people drive my manuals -- seriously, there isn't much damage that they can do with the proper instruction. It's not like they are dumping the revs and sidestepping the clutch, ha ha.
My technique -- have them slowly release the clutch until the car starts moving, and then slowly roll in to the throttle. |

911 Transmissions take a lot of abuse. I've seen the inside of more than a few...

My corrado was great to teach in. It had so much low end torque, that you could literally just let the clutch out, and it would go.
That and a VW clutch and tranny are cheap and easy to do! |

Like I would ever let someone else drive my Porsches! Especially some kid.
Truth be told, I learned to drive a stick on a '70 Z-28 that was a customer's car at the service station I worked at when I was 17 in '72.

What could go wrong with an offer like that?
Our snowmobile club does a "Wounded Warrior" ride each year. We loan snowmobiles to wounded vet's and take them out. A new, $12,000 sled got totaled the 1st year......r

Hmm, I wonder if I'd pass for a kid just learning to drive a stick. It might be cool to get to drive a bunch of classic cars.

I've had a lot of amazingly forgiving 3-pedal cars that I have allowed several people a go at that had never done it before. With proper instruction, there really isn't a ton a damage to be done. A few times killing it at a few hundred RPM is a lot better than a few times having it slip on you at the track at 8000 RPM....
My 944 cars were, IMO, always stupid easy clutches to drive- real easy to feel the bite. I taught some people to drive in my old 89 Toyota, which didn't have a lot of feel, but didn't need it- hold gas steady and let it out, regardless of speed it just went. My Boxster is a different story. Heavier clutch than japanese cars. Dual mass made it horribly jerky and would buck badly if you got it wrong. Clutch overheats very quickly in traffic if you slip it too much stop-n-going. Once it overheats it wants to slip more. The Lotus is ridiculously easy to drive yet requires more revs to make up for lack of torque at idle. The clutch also feels bulletproof, unlike the Porsche's.

I see it as win-win.
1) son learns how to drive stick in a 911 (how cool is that when you are 17??) 2) if the 30yr old gearbox is hurt, i get a rebuilt 915 with fresh syncros and maybe a Guard LSD Win-win. Maybe I can even charge the local teens to learn how, and help fund the new parts. ![]() |

I think it is a great idea. it gets kids exposure to cars they wouldn't otherwise be allowed to touch much less drive. Barry Wolk did it last year in his pristine 356 Continental and while he was apprehensive he said he and the kids had a great time and the car made it through unscathed.
