SPIDER!! Check this out
I found it in my yard.
Super aggressive. Very big and scary fangs. http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...85614706_n.jpg http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...03828753_n.jpg http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...59544353_n.jpg What is that?!? KT |
Nope, don't think it's either of those.
Dead spider? |
Dude, that thing requires artillery to take back your yard.
|
Quick! Kill it with fire!
|
Thing's like a land lobster.
KT |
Bear grylls would have carved a spear, stabbed it, built a fire, roasted it and eaten it...
|
I don't know what it is, but it'd be dead shortly...
|
30-30 should do the trick.

Male tarantula. Harmless to humans but fun to watch. Keep him around!

Takes him many years to get to that size, so if you don't like him in your yard, do him a favor and bring him to exile - don't stomp him.

Reminds me of last summer when I was living out on 400 acres in the mojave. The black widows used to crawl on me when I'd sleep. They'd be everywhere. I'd probably kill 4-5 black widows a day, no joke. I'd hear the tarantulas walking across the window sill/mini-blinds at night, too. I lived in an 18 foot RV out on a dry lake bed, south east of Edwards AFB. (A strange bucket list item of mine). I could go on and on about Mojave Greens, Black widows, Tarantulas, etc.
I was driving home one night...and there was one stop sign out of the middle of nowhere. You could literally see cars 5 miles away if there were any, but for some reason, I always stopped. Anyway, as I was pulling up to the stop sign, I saw what I thought were, honest to God, lobsters walking across the road. The lights of my headlights reflected off their backsides. There had to be 10 of them....Giant Desert Hairy Scorpions. They were almost a foot long each. I hopped out of my car to look at them, but it definitely creeped me out. Talk about an experience living out there... |
scorpions, spiders?
thanks for tonight's nightmare scenario..great. trek, i hate spiders. remind me i cant ever help you move. |
The spider had hair.
It was very fast and was attacking the stick I poking it with. ( go figure ) It was under a rock out by the road. I left it alone and ran for it... KT |
How big was that thing? There's nothing in the photos for scale reference... It looks like something that'd leave you with an awful nasty bite though.

ARVIN!!!! I haven't seen him in years!!!! Dude, he just wants to shake your hand! He is rather aggressive in that desire! Besides, he'll take care of small mice, insects, other things you don't like. Keep Arvin around, he's good people!
|
The Napa tourism industry will quickly sweep this under the rug.

Wolf spider
We have a smaller version of that guy around here known as "wolf" spiders. Ours are only about 1/2" to 1" in size but look just like the one you found. Generally harmless excpet that they will make you hurt yourself! The ones that I don't like are the black widows and brown recluse spiders. They definitely get stomped!
|
Banana spiders are stupid fast......seen a few here.....so fast I could get pics lol
|
I HATE spiders !!!
I am NEVER coming to your house !!! |

Screw that! I might be ok with some sort of wildlife relocation that moved him far away from me. |
For a bunch of guys, you sure turn into a bunch of pussies about spiders....

How did you get close enough to that thing to take those bared-fang pics?!
|
Definitely a tarantula. Pretty harmless to humans. They will bite if you piss them off. This one looks pretty pissed off. I would be too if some gigantor was poking at me with a stick. :)

I heard they like to hang around creeks and small rivers. Then they jump on the backs of people kneeling in the water.
|
I had a tarantula as a pet long ago. Totally harmless to people. Mine was about the size of my fist. Was really cool to watch him eat.
|
Is this the first tarantula you have seen? Every fall we would see them crossing the roads or even on our property growing up in the south bay area. Spiders creep me out.

About thirty years ago, a friend of my room mate's was into "exotic pets". I had no idea, until we went to his apartment one day. There I was, sitting on his couch, when this goddamn tarantula crawls onto my shoulder and starts down my arm. Totally unexpected. Apparently this guy rather enjoyed watching unsuspecting guests' various reactions when "introduced" to one of his pets in this manner. Well, as things turned out, he didn't like my reaction all that much. I screamed like a little girl, which I'm sure pleased him no end, but I also swatted the damn thing to the floor and stomped it with my motorcycle boot. What a hell of a mess that made... It took me all of a nanosecond to figure out what just happened, as spiders like that are not exactly native to Washington, at least not our wet side of the state. I was pissed, already out off of the couch, and coming for the clown who used to have a pet spider. My room mate, ever the careful observer, rather quickly took note of the rapidly deteriorating situation and promptly hussled my ass out the front door and down to our bikes. A few days later said room mate was telling me his friend was demanding I pay for his spider. I told him to inform Spiderman he could come by and ask me nicely for the money any day he felt up to it. I guess that stain on his carpet was actually worth several hundred dollars, even back then. Never did see the guy again, though. Funny thing is, if the thing had been in its terrarium, or at least on a leash or something, I would have probably thought it was pretty cool. |
Crazy thing is that they can jump pretty good too. Back in college my roomate found one on the road in Arizona and brought it back to the dorms as a pet. One day as I was trying to be brave, he placed it on my hand and after 30 seconds or so the damn thing jumped to the desk 5 or so feet away. Scared the piss out of me as I didn't think they could do that. Damn spider had to go back to the wild after that...

Yeah, OK....No! The body was about the size of a half dollar, and then the hairy, spiky legs. Maybe 3 inches across? I hope I don't see it again... KT |
